Hello there, I'm SonicManEXE. I'm brand new as a member, but I've actually been checking the Show Off Your Work section for months now. I love Famitracker and all the possibilities it holds. I'm not very experienced as I mostly just listen to songs uploaded by you guys, but I have made a number of songs, most unfinished. I do, however, have two complete songs that I'd like to share with you guys: Beware the Forest's Mushrooms (the Forest Maze) from Mario RPG done in MMC5 and The Decisive Battle from Final Fantasy VI done in 2A03. I'm not good with percussion in real life or here, so they do sound a little... barren, but I'd love to see any remixes if any of you feel like doing one. Something to note is that I wrote all of these from sheet music across the internet; they were not done by ear. I am NOT any sort of music theory wiz, but I do know a bit, especially transposition (as a clarinet player who can't find video game music in Bb, it's kind of important to know )

Threads are for finished, full-fledged tunes. For unfinished tunes and doodles, please use the [url=http://famitracker.com/forum/posts.php?id=2853]doodle thread.
Also, it might be more convenient for everyone involved to zip your FTMs if you're going to attach so many of them (so you don't have to click browse, upload, browse, upload etc. and we don't have to download each file individually).

I record (some) NSFs on hardware. Feel free to [url=http://www.famitracker.com/forum/posts.php?id=3633]request a hardware render.
Of course. I just thought that since I had so many I'd make a thread of them. Also, yeah... sorry about that. The next time I have a ton of FTMs, I'll but them in a zipped folder in the doodle thread.

Don't listen to them, SonicManEXE, if Buddha W posted this himself they'd praise him for his excellent use of four squares in forest_maze.
Really catchy, but you've got a release on frame 03 line 14 that doesn't do anything because you've not set up a release for that instrument. To set one up, just go to your instrument's volume and right click underneath the sequence editor. No biggy.
If you're looking for musical criticism you're in the wrong place.
Citation: dwedit and jrlepage's post
I like how dwedit said "These sound like a rough draft" in a thread marked "incomplete".
I bet I'm reading like some conspiracy theorist, but I mean, don't you feel cheated dude? There is some pretty catchy stuff here, and you wrote a nice little summary and everything.
But it isn't about how good you are, it is about stroking the guy next in line. Like when gyms quit and everyone cried, but I pretended to quit and they all got a chuckle out of it.
Someone even said "you should make music for yourself". Yea, that is why you're posting on a forum, hey buddy? How blantant can your hypocrisy be before you see it.
Kind of like how boodaw and doxic gave me shit for posting a "meme"
(if you really think A52 is a meme) and then they never seem to say anything about all the My Little Pony avatars everyone just seems to be using.
What a farce, and they say "well this isn't 4chan".
No, because 4chan doesn't care about if you are a new member or an old member, they care about the quality of your post.

Hyena, what did I do?! Edit: Oh right, my sig. To be fair, I didn't know that writing an Action 52 cover of something was a meme, and I just thought what B00daw said was rather funny, so I sigged it. Didn't mean to offend you man, but I don't think me saying sorry at this point will do anything since you seem to hate me already. Sorry to insert drama into your thread SonicMang
Anyway, the reason I didn't say anything is because I don't comment on covers that often, usually because I don't know the source material. Anyhow I did listen to these and I liked a few, but some I think are just too big for FamiTracker to handle, I.E. "dancing mad"
Keep up the hard work!

Well, didn't listen to most stuff, just because I'm having an internal mind explosion and I can't sleep nor listen to anything. I would do, just to let you know.
From what I heard, I'd recommend 2 things:
First, try getting the source material(songs) of what you are going to cover. Forest Maze wasn't very accurate, and since you said you got it from sheet music, I can't blame you for anything. Super Mario RPG music comes in SPC format. Usually, these players have functions or options to deactivate channels. This way, you'd have to do it by ear, though.
Second, was 8 channels usage intentional in Dancing mad part 1? If not, try to use as few channels as possible, since you might already know the N163 chip had that problem with the high-pitched whine. The song doesn't sound bad, though, but doesn't have much interesting.
I hope this doesn't put you down, but help you instead. I'm sure in a few months you'll be great.
--Well, I have to admit that Forest Maze was better than my initial, private stuff. I wasn't good at covers.--
Well, this isn't how I would expect a thread about random songs to take its course, but I do appreciate your advice, Hyena and Mr_Master. I actually just made Fiddle de Chocobo from Final Fantasy VII, if you'd like to hear it. Like I've already said, I'm not good at percussion; also, I don't know how to record DPCM. Therefore, this is a complete version, pretty much.
While I'm talking time to reply, I really appreciate your MMBN FTMs, Master. I grew up with the games and I'm surprised how accurate they sound.

Always intrested in hearing new stuff. Post it, I'll be sure to check it out.
You can get a pretty nice drum sound by combining noise & a triangle with a 2-- effect on it.
I'd like to recommend listening to this for an example:
http://famitracker.com/forum/posts.php?id=3902&highlight=likeacloud
If your triangle is coming in too loud you can turn it down by stuffing a Z3F (or Z whatever you feel is appropriate) command into the DPCM channel. The lower the number after Z is, the louder the triangle will be. If your triangle is being used, set a square to V02
and try using the 2-- effect again.

Pixel wrote a nice little area about drums in his manual too. You kinda need archiving software and a pdf reader, so if you don't bother checking it out I wouldn't be suprised.
Or you can go lurk the instrument thread, and use someone's VRC7 drumset or something.
DPCM is weird. You're going to want audacity if you don't already have it. Go to audacity, turn on your mic, and record whatever you want. But make sure the quality is good, because if it isn't going to get better when you convert it. Export it as a .wav and exit audacity.
Anyway, theres a DPCM samples tab on any 2a03 instrument.
You click import and stick in a .wav, and then you are pretty much done.
Well, SonicManEXE, now I know the meaning of that EXE in your username. Thanks a lot for that comment about my MMBN covers.
So, since I feel generous, I'll give you my DPCM samples ripped from Kirby Super Star. I hope you make good use of them. Remember to use them with the noise channel. The way I use them goes like this:
Kicks go with 2-# noise, volume from D to F.
Snares go with 9-# noise, volume from D to F.
1, 2, 3, and 3_short go with A-# noise, volume A.
All of these have an A0F effect with them.
And my hi-hats are played without DPCM, at C-# noise and F volume, A00 effect.
EDIT: If you don't feel good with DPCM, I also have a Tri kick, which can also be used as a snare.
It is used at A-3 as a kick with 2-# noise and volume from D to F
And at A-4 as a snare with 7-# or 9-# noise and volume from D to F.
Of course you can feel free to experiment with these.
EDIT2: I'll release my Candy Mountain covers in a few minutes. Take a look at them to see how these samples work.
EDIT3: [url=http://www.famitracker.com/forum/posts.php?id=4322]Here's the link.
I love most of Yoko Shimomura's work, so Beware the Forest Mushrooms immediately took my attention.
You have a good start with the concept of keeping the squares set to just one continuing volume parameter (even if it's set to blank,) but the other part that comes along with that technique is learning to screw with the voume settings.
I updated your FTM to reflect an idea of what you can do (or, at least, what my mind remembers when I think back to the first time I heard the song.)
They're as follows:
1) I screwed with the volume parameters on your bass line in pulse 4 (For all intentive purposes, I'm referring to the second set of pulse channels as "Pulse 3" and "Pulse 4" respectively.) While I see you were going for a more staccato note, it's not that short.
2) The 2A03 pulses only go as low as A#0, so going any lower will still play the same A#0. I upped the octave on the bass line throughout the song to reflect that.
3) I added a Single-channel echo/reverb to pulse 3 at frame 04. That technique is fantastic on its own (and can make a song feel really big if you then chain the same pattern in the next pulse channel over.)
The ending... you could have used both pulse 1 and 2 to keep the end from seeming so hacked up and glued together. I would've fixed it all, but you caught me at a time where I'm lazy.
For what it's worth, I hope you take the advice well and that this is the start to an awesome new hobby for you!
