Throughout the many hours I have been on my iPod, I have yearned each time to go back home to work on Famitracker projects that I have put off for months. As I came back here once again, I decided to ask myself: What if Famitracker had an app? What if you could make 8-bit music in the palm of your hand, or at the very least, listen to it and see the pattern design, etc.? That way, one wouldn't have to wait hours until they get home to look through SoYW posts and judge. I ask, though: Is this even possible (I am just learninh how to code; self taught so far, so it's kind of slow at the moment)? Would a portable version exist at some point if looked at?

Now I understand that even if this was possible, jsr would likely put it low on the list, and possibly for good reason. It likely only applies to a small group of people that having a portable Famitracker isn't really needed. I, though, think it would be neat, perhaps innovative, to see such a thing have a chance to exist, even if it is low on the priority list.

FamiTracker is very heavily based on Windows libraries, and a port to iOS or Android would be very difficult. A complete rewrite would probably be necessary.

This has been asked before, and the consensus was that it would be just as hard to start from scratch as it would be to try to convert the existing code into an iOS app.

If you want to make some chiptune on the go, though, you may want to check out Sunvox.

If tracking in the NSF format is a requirement, perhaps an NES emulator and NTRQ would be an alternative to consider.

I really didn't like reading about a complete rewrite, as that is so much work to be done when it comes to coding; that much I know. Though that is true, especially considering the difficulty, an NSF player App on its own right would, for the most part, be a great thing to have.

On the other hand, I have been reading that NSFs don't always play correctly, especially concerning N163 and VRC7 chips, so that's why I play it safe and get the .ftm.

I have heard of a Linux Version being made before, but I haven't given a complete look. Was that a complete rewrite or an alteration of what was already written for Windows? I do agree that spreading Famitracker to other Operating Systems would vastly increase the amount of people using it, so being able to accurately write without having a complete rewrite can be an important factor as to how long it would take and how much effort would have to be put into it.

As for jrlepage's suggestion on an NES emuator and NTRQ, that WOULD be an interesting alternative...but, again, what if one would want to view the ftm?

If we can find somebody with the time and effort, the possibilities are endless.

Such a thing most likely does exist, depending on what mobile device you're using. Modizer for iOS and Droidsound for Android tend to be the most popular. iOS also has NoiseES to offer, but don't go for that one. The author doesn't respond to suggestions and bug reports, and prefers to focus on adding new platforms instead of fixing existing ones. Most expansion chips aren't supported anyway. Modizer lets you play NSFs (with any expansion) in addition to dozens upon dozens of other formats (way too many to list here!). S3M/XM/MOD/IT, NSF, VGM, GBS, AY, SAP, MIDI... You name it, it plays it, pretty much.

If you need to be listening to FT's rendition, just export to WAV and convert that to whatever format is most convenient for you (MP3, M4A or FLAC), and listen to that on your mobile device. Granted, it's not very efficient in terms of file size but with such specific requirements you need to make compromises anyway.

The thread is [url=http://famitracker.com/forum/posts.php?id=3568]right here. I believe some of the code is ported over but most of it is rewritten.

I'm going to state the obvious and point out that an NES emulator does not output FTM files... But you can share the SAV file that contains your music. With the right tools you can export to NSF on any Windows machine, and you can even patch the NTRQ file with your own DMC samples so you don't have to use the default ones that come with the ROM.

Ah, excellent. I am quite pleased with the results that have popped up here.

I do like to listen to Famitracker's rendition, but as you've said, file size is HUGE under typical circumstances. .ftms are extraordinarily small and if player existed for it, imagine the space that could be saved! Then again...the fact that coding it would take a lot of time would probably turn one off from doing so.

Thanks for the thread and information...still a lot of work had to be done on it.

Thanks again. I got what I'm likely going to get from the post, considering that coding takes forever.

Also, you might want to try getting into MML/ppMCK if you want to compose NSFs on your phone.
MMLShare.com is the place
