So recently built a new computer and am running Windows 7 on it.
When I open up Famitracker and play a file, it's pretty laggy and this message along the bottom of the window: "Audio buffer underrun, sound setting may be too high for this system or CPU utilization is too high."
It happens even when I don't have any other programs open.
Anyone know what's causing this and how to fix it?
Chances are, there's a number of things that could cause it.
First off, are you using Windows 7 64-bit or 32-bit? Seeing that the binaries look optimized for 32 bit Windows XP, you may have to fiddle around with Windows XP Mode under Windows 7.
Secondly, are you using FamiTracker 0.3.0 (from the main download site) or FamiTracker 0.3.5 (from the forum boards)? The latter is a beta program, but I highly doubt that it's causing such problems.
Thirdly, are you trying to open *.ftm files from this site? If you are, you have to watch out; *.ftm files created with version 0.3.0 will NOT work with version 0.3.5 (or vice versa). That means you'd have to look carefully at the forum discussions or play around with the two programs yourself.
Well, that's as much help as I can provide, being an average user.

1) This is not a Windows 7-exclusive issue.
2) Error: "Audio buffer underrun, sound settings may be too high for this system or CPU utilization is too high."
3) It happens when the CPU usage exceeds 100%. As the computer cannot handle too many things at once, everything will start to lag, including FamiTracker. Try to keep pressing FamiTracker on the 'Start' toolbar and FamiTracker should repeat minimizing and restoring. Now anything being played will act crazily.
So chances are that you have installed too many things in your computer.

CPU-related issues/errors should exist on every operating system.

As said, the CPU usage is the reason behind the lag, so it doesn't only with FamiTracker, such issue appears in everything like Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, Microsoft Paint etc., only that FamiTracker does display the issue on the status bar.

This is not related at all... FamiTracker 0.3.5. beta works well with 0.3.0. files and FamiTracker 0.3.0. shuts down upon loading a 0.3.5. beta file.
I'm running Windows 7 32 bit, and would be surprised if CPU usage would be an issue as it only hovers around 1% when that program is running. I don't have lag with any other programs.
The lag isn't terrible. It doesn't really prevent me from using Famitracker at all. I was more just curious at why the message would pop up with a new computer.
Try playing with sound options in famitracker
I had buffer underrun every now and then, until I changed Buffer Length.
Through experimenting I found that 22ms is the best for my machine. Now that error's appearance is rare
