I know that dpcm lowers the volume of the noise channel.

After I've used dpcm for a while I want to have a small part with only noise. But it's not loud enough because of the dpcm lowering it before. How can I fix this?

By lowering the volume of all the other parts.

Well there's the Zxx effect. I don't completely know what it does, but I just made an example:

(Make sure the volume isn't too high)

The effect directly set output level of the DPCM. If you also playing DPCM sample at the same time, it will have no effect, because the output level will be immediately changed by the DPCM sample.

There is also option in WAV import window, to restore the output after the sample. It is the solution to Weirdbananas problem, because it restores the level smoothly, and with Zxx you'll get audible click.

Except I think with the new version, you need to edit the sample directly in the editor. I don't think it has that option anymore.

Zxx will change the output level before the DPCM sample is played. It is used in some covers to restore the output level if the DPCM samples increase the output level at the end, and will produce a pop that somehow strengthens the DPCM sample.

Just use a note cut on the DPCM channel.

The note cut doesn't have any effect on the DPCM, noise or triangle channels' volume; so far, only the Zxx effect does (& it can only be used in the DPCM channel, as I understand it).

But a warning; ZFF in the DPCM channel will produce a popping sound while playing a note in any of the above channels. It's good for DPCM snare drums, though.

Does it?!

So the note cut has an effect on the volume of the DPCM & all other channels tied to it?

A note cut is equivalent to Z00.
Also when 'xx' > 7F, Zxx is equivalent to Z(xx - 80), e.g. Z00 = Z80, Z35 = ZB5, Z7F = ZFF.

idk, from those Michael Jackson tunes I made on the VRC7, the noise can be heard but barely the DPCM, and they are all on their fullest volume.

That's interesting to know, but then again, a note cut is the same as Z00 & Z80, as you said. Doesn't that technically mean there's no volume change when a note-cut is used?
