I don't know ANYTHING about music, I don't even know what one of those staff things are...I make music using typing, with my keyboard , I do NOT have a midi keyboard. I don't know what to do to tell the truth. I CAN make good instruments, I AM pretty good at making music (for a beginner i guess) but I never had one lesson in music, and most of the good trackers can just...use a midi keyboard. Reply please...

I have a story to tell. There was a guy. There was a dragon. The guy got burned into a crisp thanks to the dragon. The dragon munched on the guy's head. The end.
Well, pretty much what I do to compose my music is write a combination of chords and imporvise. It's easy to improvise once you get used to it. If you know chords like sevenths, sixths, and etc. then you're set.
my intuition suggests to me that trackers aren't really the best platform to "learn music" on. they're generally uninviting unless you already understand how to write music, and even then they can be a challenge. i'd suggest using a sequencer/DAW to begin with. also, a midi keyboard always helps.
Chords are a combination of three or more notes. For example, a C chord would be C, E, and G combined and its scale would be C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. You can use it's scale to improvise. Improvise means to play a scale of notes up and down pretty much (At least, that's the way I see it.)

You really don't have to worry about that, KoopaEater. You said you're 12, eh? you're still at a good age to start learning music (if you want to).
But like Dave said, tracker programs are a bad way to start learning. You should learn it the proper way (as a matter of fact, I used to take piano lessons since I was in the 2nd grade until I reached the 10th grade. I also joined the high school band for a while). But once you start with the basics, you'd realize how simple it is to learn (like Doommaster1994's trying to say).
The best way to learn music is through standard notation. This means learning to read actual musical notes & what sound they're supposed to produce. Then, you can begin to play around by mixing & matching musical notes to see how well they go together. Slowly & slowly, you can use this technique to create a song (that's what's called improvisation; experimenting & creating something on the fly).
I personally don't have a MIDI keyboard either (namely because I can't afford USB keyboards & because I don't have a computer with a MIDI port). But that said, many of us don't even bother with MIDI keyboards. What's more; many musicians actually didn't learn music from any school or teacher. They just played around, making up their own stuff.
So I wouldn't be surprised to hear great music coming from you. Just learn what you feel you need to learn, keep practicing & experiment with it. The important thing is to be confident in what you're doing.

Yes I'm in the high school band too. I started composing at 15 and I'm already doing audio for games. I have a few MIDI keyboards but I don't like using them in Famitracker. For me it's much easier to use the computer keyboard. I have never had lessons either. That's pretty good if you can compose music at that age.
Even learning it at that age is pretty good. You don't need to know how to read music, really. You just need to know how to arrange a series of sounds in a way that you can consider music.

Wasn't expecting this much encouragement...you guys are really nice. Wish Mex was :P At least he has talent, but he's a big jerk :D I love him, but I hate him. I will keep trying, I made the intro of the Cave Story theme almost perfectly, I can create Triplet Echoes thanks to a Megaman 10 cover I found on here...I changed it slightly.
The thing with music is that it's really an art. What makes it an art is that you can do it anyway you want, honestly. So keep it up & keep practicing/experimenting with it (even in real life; if you have an instrument at home, why not play around with it?).

The main way I compose music is like David Wise, where I get a combination of notes floating around in my head. When I think it sounds good I write it but if I think it sounds bad I don't write it.
Wish I had an instrument...my grandma has a cute kid keyboard, but it's only having like, half of the notes I need...but yes, thanks for the suggestions.
Look at the track of a really good musician and see what and how he/she lays things out in the track. What would help is if first you understand how the instruments he/she used work and then find what instruments go where. If you understand where I'm going with this, then you know how to reverse-engineer. Sometimes it's a good way to learn.
Music, you will find, isn't something you can master. Instead it's a lifelong learning experience, but a very fun one. My favorite genres are 70's rock, 80's electronic pop and alternative rock, 90's alternative rock and industrial rock and also electronica, etc. One genre stands out among all to me: Video Game Music from 1989 upward.
You are welcome to look at the many examples of tracking here, as there are many of them. I also write tracks here as well on the Show Off Your Work forum.
Have fun with this - always. ^_____^

You now process Dracula's Rib. Good luck processing it...
Well I'm 19, I have no idea how to read music and I track with the keyboard, but I'd like to think that I still come out with good covers and music :P. (Although I guess I have a bit of an advantage since I play the piano.)
Do people actually normally use a Midi keyboard for tracking? I didn't know that. I find the keyboard to be easiest.
Anyway, I started to learn about music at around your age I think, so that's fine if you don't know much about music yet. Just play around and see what you can come up with. Just keep in mind that a tracker like FamiTracker won't teach you how to read music or anything, but it might help you learn about how to compose music better.
