Hello all,
I have been using famitracker for a while and it is a very good problem however i have a problem with it. Sometimes when I try to open music files or while the songs are playing I will get a message that says "Famitracker has encountered a problem and needs to close, we're sorry for the inconvenience" and then sometimes it will say the same thing right after that except for DrWatson Postmortem Debugger and then my computer will lock up and I have to restart the computer and I wait for a while for it but the computer is still locked up. I don't want to stop using this program because I like it a lot but I will have to if I can't find a solution. Is it because I have certain applications open like Steam, Skype or AIM? Any help or tips at all would be greatly appreciated. I have attached one of the songs that it happened to. It works now but I'm still keeping an eye out, it seems to come up with the error at random times I think.
Thanks a lot for your help (and time),
-Nick

Good work with the song (I take it you you've read musical notation from Beethoven's works).

Anyways, I've encountered similar problems, too; I have a feeling that this is an intrinsic bug in FamiTracker itself.

I've noticed this when I'm trying to do a variety of tasks in rapid succession within FamiTracker (such as playing back the tune, then immediately stopping the song, immediately editing notes & pressing play again).

My advice would be to take it easy with editing.

I've also had a bug where exporting my songs to NSF causes the program to panic & close without warning. This happened to me because my NSF tune hit the 16 KB mark.

Hi Doommaster1994

I haven't heard before that the program is randomly crahsing. This makes it a little harder to solve; crashes are often caused by a bug in an operation, and then it's often reproducible and easier to debug.

What OS and version of direct x do you use? You also mentioned DrWatson, that's a program used to save diagnostic information when a program crash. If you can send one of these reports to me then it would be of great help.

It would also be good to know if it still crashes with the new beta release, you can get it here:

I use Windows XP (NOT 64 bit). I don't know my version of direct x. I will admit though, it started happening when I was opening my music files with both versions and maybe that's why, maybe there's some kind of conflict. I will download that Famitracker version.

Yes, I'm not sure but I THINK I solved the problem. I think that when I open files made or edited in the beta version and open them with the new version that's not beta it doesn't like that for some reason. It seems to be the only time it does that. Well I'll be moving on to the beta version. It's better anyway. I will notify you if I have anymore problems.

Yeah; because the beta program supports more audio possibilities than the previous version, the two file types are somewhat incompatible.

Mind you, watch out for VRC7; exporting the song to an NSF may cause problems.

Thanks for the info! And I made an NSF using the VRC7 and it sounded good and it worked except the VRC7 chip was too loud but that was the only problem. I don't mean loud like louder than all the instruments I mean like ear piercing loud.

Yeah; I saw this problem, too. The tracker doesn't export the volume controls for VRC7 properly, so it ignores it completely.

Ah ok. Nevertheless it's still a really great program. Whoever created the program should rule the earth lol (I think that's jsr?)

i encountered the same problem tonight.

i was making a song in version 3.0 and decided to load a DPCM sample using the sample preview option in the latest beta.

the sample loaded fine, and upon trying to save it in the beta, FT crashed and the .ftm will now no longer open in any version.

a dialouge box pops up saying:

"encountered a sharing violation while accessing:....blah blah"

help?

People should remember: BETA means BETA. It is unstable and unsafe. Never use it without backups, never migrate to it having stable version.

Your file is 0 bytes long. Do you think data is still there?

yeah, the backup file will open and everything is there.

ill just play it safe and wait for the official release. i guess consider it more of a bug report.

So far it has been working great for me and I haven't had any big problems with it. If I do though I will notify.

Technically, every version of FamiTracker (including the latest stable release) is beta. And as much as we'd like to see a good, stable, final release of FamiTracker someday, we also have to remember that jsr & his crew are only individuals & are doing this in their spare time.

By the way, elsh; your FTM file is corrupt (I can't even download it).

It is not corrupt, it is non-existant, as I said above (empty file).
