Here's something simple without samples - just OPLL. Those of you who played PC games in the 90's might recognise the drums.

Hint: I was feeling a little imp-ish.

BTW, if anyone can make the VRC7 do tricks, you can feel free to post them here. FM is very cool to play with if you know what you're doing.

^_____^ It also brings back the Sound Blaster days all over again.

Awesome, Demick. The tune reminds me of Geothermal from Cave Story (which is the music that plays in the room where you first encounter the Core before the battle begins).

If you can do music by ear or even make any kind of synth patch by ear including the FDS, you can do FM by ear. Feel free to reverse-engineer the FM patches I made or use them. The VRC7's OPLL is actually the easiest FM chip to program out of the few with which I have made instruments.

FM is about how it sounds, and thus is aural trial-and-error. The Modulator is the one that outputs the sound and is the one with which the Feedback control works.

The drum patches are done by ear and are the closest thing to the OPL2 Sound Blaster/Adlib DOOM drums and percussion I can make.

More like a pain in the a$$ than anything else. It's worth it, though, if you are hard-core about being a purist about FM or even if you just want FM drums in your track to begin with.

I learned how to create FM patches with a little help from a program called IMF Creator (a program used for creating IMF files for use with Wolfenstein 3D) which edits the Genmidi.opl file used with Sound Blaster 16/AdLib soundcards for ancient PCs or just edits the IMF's patches (which in turn are based on the Genmidi.opl file described above).

I also learned from TFM Music Maker (LOVE this program, although it's a little limited in the tempo area and kind of quiet). This is a MUST HAVE for anyone who wants to make anything OPN-related (MegaDrive/Genesis, ZX Spectrum, and the like). And of course the FM VSTs for FL Studio helped as well. ^____^
