Hi guys, I got about 6 minutes of Beyond This Life and 2.5 of The Dance of Eternity.
There are some things that sound a bit uncomfortable, particularly the unison solos (frames 17~1C in Beyond this Life, and 11~15 in The Dance of Eternity), and the ragtime piano part in the last frame of The Dance of Eternity. Can you help me a bit in advice in how to make them sound better?
Plus, any general feedback is also accepted.

Multitasked doing other things and suddenly heard some MM2/MM9/Earthbound in this album... Hah!
I love the notation throughout this, great job hitting all those notes! I think this could use some improvement in the sound design, though.
Perhaps you could refer to the FX4 album for reference? https://virt.bandcamp.com/album/fx4
There's also the DIAD album, which actually has the FTMs open-source, if you want to study those too (Particularly tracks 04-06): http://ubiktune.com/releases/ubi065-diad-diad (CTRL+F for "NSF & FTM" )
Hope this helps!
EDIT: I've attached a quick (lazy) edit of the solo in Beyond This Life to give you an idea of what I mean. Noise and DPCM are finished in this excerpt, but I didn't add all the Sxx cuts on Triangle and all the fancy stuff in Pulse 1/2. Only enough to "get the point." I also spread out the tempo so you have more room to place more note release commands in-between notes, but unfortunately this ended up breaking some triplets, so you'll have to go back and modify those if you decide to work off of this... Sorry!
EDIT2: For quick editing purposes, I'm just going to copy/paste some shortcuts/tips I've posted in other threads:
- CTRL+A (twice): Highlight all notes in the pattern
- CTRL+M: Paste without overwriting (Very helpful for single-channel pseudo-echo)
- Right Click > Expand: Spread out all highlighted notes by *2
- Shift+F1/F2 (Or Shift+Scrollwheel): Add/Subtract numbers on effect/volume columns
- Shift+UDLR: Highlight without mouse
- Page Up/Down/Home/End: Quick navigation+highlighting for spread out patterns
- F7: Play from where you currently are
- CTRL+Enter: Play the row your cursor is currently on without playing the song
- F8: Halt all sound
- You can drag an instrument and drop it over another one to re-order it
- Take advantage of the "Step" under Speed/Tempo/Rows/Frames. That will allow you to fix all that echo quickly, as well as quickly notate some songs you spread out!
Also I quickly modified the drums using 0CC-FamiTracker's Find/Replace All function. (I'm not going to get in-depth on that, but it's something I thought I'd mention to save time.)
Sure thing! I think I should emphasize some things that I didn't clarify in my previous post:
- Try to use triangle and pulse 2 to play out the chords. For songs like this, you typically want to have pulse 2 emphasize the power chord (basically, all of its notes are exactly 7 semitones above the bass notes)
- Use 4xy, Qxy, Rxy, 1xx, 2xx, and 3xx a lot more for pulse/tri channels to make them sound a lot more embellished. The small details can do a lot! (Try to change Vxx every note on guitar solos too: they can help sometimes! I also like using Duty Cycle "0 1" on the rhythm guitars)
- Try to cut off the bass 2 frames before every note. Use Sxx if you have to to achieve this. Use note release instead if you're doing it on pulses, because echo typically works better than cutting the note directly.
- Use echo on pulse 2 whenever it isn't playing anything else. Use P81 to slightly sharpen the note tuning very slightly to avoid clashing with the source of that echo.
- Low volume levels on pulse/noise = louder triangle and DPCM. Remember that instrument and volume column vol. levels multiply off each other. Pay attention to the green blocks right under each channel name, because that's the output volume!
I've attached another demo to demonstrate these.

Quick explanation of the commands I listed:
4xy: Vibrato, x is speed, y is depth. Don't forget to disable this with a 400 by the time you play your next note! (This applies to 1xx/2xx/3xx too!)
Qxy/Rxy: Pitchbend y semitones at x rate. Q goes up, R goes down. Useful if you need to stop at a specific note.
1xx/2xx: Pitchbend up/down at xx rate. Use these if you don't need to stop at a particular note.
3xx: Pitchbend to a given note at xx rate. This is useful for emulating portamento and if you need a more gradual pitchbend than Qxy/Rxy, as demonstrated in my attached FTM.
Vxx: Control pulse duty cycle on a blank instrument
