I'm new to this forum, but definitely not new to FamiTracker, which I've been using for years. I don't think I'm the best at it, but I'm capable of creating stuff in it. I've decided to join this forum to have my ego stroked, to stroke the egos of musicians who are even better than I am (maybe), and to maybe learn a few things that'll make me a better composer.
Without further ado, here's my latest work. Be warned -- it's in the key of E, like many other songs of questionable quality, particularly "rock" songs. However, sometimes E stands for "Extraordinary", so consider giving it a listen.
(Also posted [url=http://8bitcollective.com/music/mathgrant/Jaws+of+Might+%28Jannes+Hyena%27s+theme%29+%282A03%29/]here in MP3 format on 8bc.)
When the tempo is 151, some rows will be shorter then the other rows especially when the speed is low, so it's better to let the tempo be 150. Also, the song is way too repetitive, try to make different phrases to improve it. As for instruments 00 and 03, they are made for the triangle wave, so the volume envelopes won't work.

I'll tuck that away for future reference! I tend to hate leaving the tempo at the default 150, because it feels lazy, but maybe there's a reason why 150 is the default -- because it's a GOOD tempo.

I'm not going to argue with you on that -- when I first posted this song on 8bc, I honestly wasn't sure whether it'd be well received, pretty much for that reason. I mean, two people (including NOROCK, who runs a blog called 8-Bit Daily and seems to have very good tastes when it comes to 8-bit music) posted positive comments on it, so it must be good enough for them. I don't blame you for that particular criticism, though. *laughs* I also tend to hate modifying a song after having already posted it, for some reason, but maybe, like leaving the tempo at 150 and not 151, it's something I should be more willing to consider. (Perhaps if I start posting FTM's here first, I'll be more willing to edit the songs before officially posting them on 8bc. )

Instrument 00 is also played on Square 2; maybe I should have named that instrument square/tri bass. As for instrument 03, its volume envelope is shared by instrument 01 (the noise percussion), and it contains a 0 in it. The volume envelopes DO work on the triangle channel; the triangle channel merely only distinguishes between 0 (off) and non-0 (on).
While I agree that leaving a tempo at 150 may feel a little lazy, it's there mostly for timing issues. As nicetas_c mentioned, odd tempos tend to mess up the frame timing of a lot of music on the 2A03 (it's only a 60Hz chip)..
As for the song, very interesting tune. Well made, and nice little tricks you're using in some spots. I don't know if it's my style of music personally, but it definitely has a game feel to it, in that I would see it playing in an NES game. But as expressed before, it's very repetitive and the melodies need a bit more work.
Well... I liked it! So much so I made a small remix of it. Hope you like it. I modeled it after the original and added some stuff. Think I can put it up on 8bit collective? I'll credit you of course! Really nice song.

It's released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license, so go for it! (I think you did a nice job, BTW. )
