I've noticed that when a note cuts or drops in volume the green volume display sort of "slides" down to the new volume level. I'm sure there are cases where this is desirable but I'd prefer a constantly exact display of the volume level of the channel. It would be helpful to see how volume envelopes are interacting with volume column values. Maybe a setting to choose between the two?

While I'm here, a less serious/realistic request:
The options for the "info pane" (below song info, above track names) don't really mean anything to me so I normally just keep the logo in there. It would be nice to be able to load a custom logo - tried doing this with resource hacker but ran into some issues.
For the far-future it would be cool to have a simple API for defining your own real-time info to display there - current instrument of each channel, current duty of the squares, whether or not a certain effect is active on each channel, etc. Maybe they could be exported and shared. This would be pretty difficult, I assume, but anything to make that info pane a little more useful would be cool.

I strongly support the request regarding the volume indicator.

Sometimes the sliding effect is useful, but I agree that perhaps a real-time indicator is more useful. (Alternately, perhaps a dimmed color bar could be used?)

Actually, what I'd like to see (should any changes be made to this) is a real-time VU meter styled after those you see on audio mixing equipment; one where the meter actually has a numbered rule at each LED mark (or, at least at every 5 LEDs,) to gauge the volume level at a certain point. Plus, if the VU meter had green, yellow & red indicators to suggest volume level, that would also be nicer than having a VU meter that only shows green (again, to gauge volume level should there be no numbered rule).

Mind you, with the size of the VU meter in FamiTracker now, I don't know how possible it would be to make it more readable, but as long as the indication is actually in real-time rather than presenting a fade during abrupt volume changes.

I've seen similar requests before, so it seems adding an option would be a good idea.

It should be possible to replace the resource bitmap. Just make sure it has the same format: 141x40 and 24bpp.
You can get some real-time information already by enabling register display from the tracker menu. Currently only for the 2A03 channels though.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Thanks for the help. bpp was probably the source of the issue with the bitmap.
I didn't even know about the register display before, that's really useful, and actually sort of alleviates my problem with the volume display.

Maybe it could be adjustable in the FT settings like, 1 is the accurate thing (no sliding, immediately jumps to the volume), 2 is a bit slower, 4 is the Standart thing, 6 is slower and 8 is the slowest,

Personally, I'd be interested in seeing some kind of hybrid setup where it primarily shows the volume in real time, but it has a secondary mark that indicates recent peak volume (like Audacity has), the secondary mark being what follows the realtime volume after a delay.

I have added options for selecting the current (default) mode and the new mode where the meters are displaying the exact volume. It'll be accessible from the menu by right clicking the channel names.
