When "paste mix"ing, the instrument field of the new notes becomes 00.
When "paste overwrite"ing, the instrument fields where old notes were becomes 00.
(to actually do what I wanted, which was putting a new set of notes on top of what was already there, preserving it but overwriting when it's different, I needed to put the new notes in first, then paste mix the old notes, and then go back and fix the instruments. Still a lot more convenient then redoing the entire section by hand.)
