I really dislike the instrument choices in this. The volume control sounds erratic; sometimes loud, sometimes quiet. The kick probably is one of the most grating drums I've ever heard in my life, and the bass instrument is too heavy on the treble IMO, at points even competing with the melody. With the new instruments you could have added some support, but it's just the bass and melody. On the NES it sounded fine but with the new instruments it sounds empty.

In stage 1, it really just sounds like a generic tune. There's the intro, and a melody. I'm surprised with the lack of volume control; when you hold notes, you NEVER leave them untouched. It's harsh on the ears and gets annoying after so long. Put on some vibrato or decay on the long notes. Also, why do you have a P7F?

In stage 3, the intro vibrato feels weird. Usually, you don't just leave vibrato and call it a day; you have it play regularly at first then you start the vibrato later. In the transition between frames 01/02, you left a hanging note in Namco 3. You also forgot to detune the echo, so the echo and the actual melody clash. (Yes, I'm aware this happened in the original too, but don't copy the original _to the letter_)

But hey, at least you got the notes right!

alrighty...

If you got a better idea for the bass instrument, or better yet, a better one altogether, by all means share it.
I like the kick. Ill try "enhancing" the melody with the squares then.
Stage 1 - the notes will be readjusted, the reason that the long notes lack vibrato is that the original 0.3.8 beta file this was in had some odd problems with vibrato on the namco channels and forgot to update it once i completed it in 0.4.4. i dont remember why i put the p7f at the time but probably i thought it sounded better.
stage 3 - ill see about the intro vibrato then.... the hanging note was an oversight due to something about repeating frames but then nothing repeated and i forgot about it. the echo detunes? interesting.

ill edit this post with the modified ftm file later

EDIT: added. also is in the file stage 2 incomplete version

This is great! You should do the title theme, too!

I think Sonic the Hedgehog's bass on N163 fits well than the Sunsoft one.
