Hello, I'm new. I know how to play piano and know all about scales and keys and chords and whatnot, but I'm trying to get started and I can't get sounds that I like. I managed to create songs based off piano, (like the one I attached), but I can't get a good melody for an 8 bit song. Can you give me some pointers or make me a small base song that I can add on to?

New to Famitracker? Everyone was new once. Based off the attached file, here's some tips I can think of:

- In the Instrument editor, try changing the duty cycle setting. The NES has three duty cycles available: 0 is what you're using right now, and as you notice it produces that sort of brassy sound. Duty cycle 1 is less brassy (sort of 'reedy' if you will, like the difference between a sax and trumpet). Duty cycle 2 produces a square wave, which is well suited for making instruments like (literally) bells and whistles.

- Triangle always sounds one octave lower than the Pulse channels, which makes it well suited for use as a bass track. If you want to use it as a melody part then go right ahead, but you'll probably want to make your Pulse channels lower volume (so they don't drown it out) and use Triangle on octaves 3-4, not octaves 2-3 (because Triangle sounds louder at higher octaves).

- To give an instrument a sustain, have its volume curve end with a nonzero value. Then when you need to stop the note, issue a 'note cut' command (you can map this under File > Configuration > General).

- If you're going to strike the same note on multiple channels simultaneously, use the P effect to detune them slightly (typically P7F on one channel and P81 on the other) and they'll mix better. Otherwise you'll run into phase issues.

- Really play around and experiment a lot with creating different volume curves for different instruments because this is the biggest influence of squeezing different sounds out of each channel.

Here's a slightly modified version of yours, just some minor tweaks but notice how different it sounds:

AKouZ1, you probably shouldn't overwhelm them with something like VRC6 or N163 instruments until they've mastered the fundamentals...

Anyway, Slenderend, if you really want something that sounds somewhat like the strike of a piano key, try an instrument definition like this:

Volume curve: 15 12 9 7 5 / 3 2 1 0
Duty cycle: 2 or 1

(the / indicates a release mark; the volume will hold at that value until you issue a note release command, after which it will continue to the end of the curve)

You misunderstood me. I don't need the sound of a piano. I want to make a song that sounds chiptune/8-bit.

The NES is already the poster child of 8-bit chiptunes, but yeah, I get what you mean. Sometimes you do want continuous volume instruments with absolute starts and stops just as a matter of aesthetics.
