Hi, first time posting after fiddling with FamiTracker for a bit. This is an uptempo remix of "Going to Georgia" by The Mountain Goats. Original here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qe6DE9BXWeY
In addition to any specific feedback you have, I'm interested in a couple of specific points:
1. Percussion composition/arranging doesn't come very naturally to me. Are there any tutorials on how to keep house beats interesting, and instrument/note selection?
2. I'm not quite sure what to do with the ending -- I tried extending another frame or two with no extra melodies, but that lost some of the impact (which the original has, too).
3. Is there a tool that normalizes the frame numbers? I started this by just doing a cover, so when I extended the bridge the frame numbers got put in weird orders and they're bugging me
Interesting tune you're covering here, it's like a mix of punk and folk or something.
As for the cover itself, I felt the melody was a bit rhythmically strange in a few spots. I think you were trying to match the kind of ranting way he sings in a few parts of the song? It might sound better to approximate those rhythms to be more in line and closer to the beat within something like famitracker. It's super difficult to inject lifelike nuances and pull it off in a way that doesn't sound wonky.
I really liked what you did with the harmony in a few spots! Particularly frame 0F.
1. There are probably a bunch of tutorials of such things on youtube I guess. I think the majority of this stuff is just a process of paying closer attention to what music does and learning stuff over time. "Music Theory" is a useful keyword to throw at google.
2. There are a ton of options for rearranging stuff(we could be here all day and night trying out different things). I did a very tiny edit on the very last frame which I feel solidifies the ending to better match the groove of your cover here(yea, the original has a sorta wonky ending doesn't it?)
3. I'm thinking I have heard of a tool that does this, but I'm not sure of its name or whereabouts. It seems the best practice is to just make sure all your frames line up with the same numbers as you add new ones.
You are right that I am trying to catch the "spoken" lines and I agree that if you're not familiar with the song, that part of my track sounds disjointed. I tried to put them on the beat in the attached revision, curious to hear whether people think that's better. In other performances of this song, he does actually sing the F instead of speaking, but it's similarly "free verse". I could also mess around with the Gxx effect but that seemed hard >_>
Yeah, I think 0F -> 10 is my favorite part harmonically too. I wonder if that means it's worth it to try different chords in another spot somewhere, but I felt like the repetition was important to the original.
Regarding your ending edit, I like it but was surprised that you didn't extend to "keep the groove going", haha. Perhaps I could also use the tempo-reducing effect, but then I can't loop if I wanted to.
