1 - Not really. If you're talking about duty cycles (timbres), the VRC6 offers more choices than the core 2A03 channels while the N163 offers customizable waveforms. The MMC5 channels use the same settings as core 2A03. Or if you're talking about raw # of channels, VRC6 and MMC5 both add just two pulse channels, N163 lets you customize the number (1 thru 8, though you usually don't need more than 4).
2 - The NES doesn't think about music in terms of standard notation (ties or slurs) but in terms of pitches and volumes (which note, note on/note off, etc.) To tie a note (which means two notes of the same pitch that are played as a single note), just don't release/cut the note. To slur two notes (of different pitches), you can use the portamento (3xx) effect or note slide (Q/R effects).
When I use 3 for effects it does nothing. I am putting in 399
Here's a few tips for using the 3xx effect:
- While you'll probably want a speed somewhere in the 20 range (also note that the speed number is in hexadecimal -- base 16 -- so "20" actually means 32), listen to how it actually plays out and tweak your speeds accordingly.
- Due to the way the NES engine generates notes, higher octaves sweep faster than low octaves. So if you want your sweep speed to sound consistent across a broad range of tones, you might want to specify slower speeds on high notes and faster speeds on low notes. (The same applies to whether you're sweeping between notes that are close to each other or far apart -- e.g. if you want to slur between an F-3 and a G-3, you might want a really slow speed, like 08 )
- Don't forget to switch it off (effect 300) when you want to go back to discrete notes.
- Since the sweep effect takes a little time to play fully, you might have to shift the slurred note's timing forward a little (e.g. try putting it on the previous row instead of where it would normally be) so that it starts the slur earlier.
