Extremely basic loop. Don't blame me, I just got Famitracker today and decided to go with the basic 5 channels :p. Any critique from veterans/people with more experience/anyone really helps!

No one is here to "Blame" you, this is a place for constructive criticism
About your track: You're right, it's very basic, but it's a lot better than many other "First Tracks" I get to hear. It's got an actual rythm and a basic theme going for it (although it's just going up half a step at a time). The Periodic Noise may get annoying, try and set the duty cycle on the noise channel to 0 until you've got some more experience.
Also, you might wanna use some more duty cycles on the pulse channels since it makes everything sound a little more diverse.
By the way, the Triangle doesn't have any volume control, so it won't need it's own instrument (or a Blank instrument is enough) if it's just for the volume.
If you want to improve, I'd highly recommend getting used to all functions and properties of Famitraker - which channel has which capabilities, what can I do with this setting, ect. The effects are especially important to learn by heart.
Also, you may wanna look at other people's FTMs. Search trough the Forum, gather some that sound good and look at the individual channels. Why does it sound so good? How are the channels interacting with each other?
And at last, if you wanna compose yourself, you'll have to take a deep look into music theory. Maybe take a class, it would really help.
Good luck and keep tracking
BTW here's a slightly reworked version of your track ^^

Thanks for the input! After that first version, I went on the wiki and experimented with the different effects; my current favorites are arpeggio and pitch slides :D They just sound so cool >3<
I also delved around a bit in the forums and found an original composition titled "rock boss" and saw how a vcr6 provides for some excellent versatility. I then tried to work with it...didn't work out so well. Might just focus on the basic 5 channels first.
And finally, for music theory, I've played in an orchestra for 4 years and went into music theory on my own. I can understand note placement, clashing, chords, all that fun jazz; I could never apply it myself, so here I am :p
I'll make sure to post my second finished result here, as well as my test runs to show my experimentation.

Was the "Rock Boss" by any chance from Graypesoda? He's a good friend of mine ^^
Anyways, pitch slides should only be used carefully because they're hard to control. They can get everything out of tune and are not really meant to be heavily incorporated in melodies (as far as I know). The Qxy and Rxy, as well as the 3xx effect are better suited for use in your melody.
If you can't advance in composing, maybe try and cover a few existing songs. Something along the lines of Super Mario Bros. should teach you the Basics of the NES sound capabilites, soundtracks like Megaman are good for advanced learners and then, there are the likes of Tim Follin (i.e. Silver Surfer) and other composers that are just way trough the roof.
Get yourself the NsfImporter by RainWarrior and some game NSFs (DON'T UPLOAD THE RESULTS HERE, PLEASE!!) and try to understand how they work and create the sound that still has so many fans and talented people still loving it.
Best of luck

Thanks! And I made the drums right on the spot, which I consider a small feat already :D
As for covering game music, I have a question: say I have audacity, and an mp3 file. How could I listen to each part of the music (i.e. melody, counter-melody, harmony, etc) independently?

Well, sadly, if all you have is an MP3, there isn't much you can do other than try your hardest and listen very carefully. But, you'll get better at it the more you practice!

Composing by ear...my greatest nemesis @.@ Positive it's every beginning composer's, but it's...so...tedious T___T
Luckily, Pokemon is on my side :p I'm (attempting at) covering Pokemon Ranger 1 music, specifically the More Legendary Pokemon Battle Theme, which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ppS99ew1BQ
Wish me luck (bass part, easy. Melody....BRING IT ON :challengeaccepted

Maybe try and get a MIDI and MidiSheetMusic or something like that to look how the song is structured. You'll be surprides as to how many MIDIs there are out in the internet.

I did my own research and decided to go with some good old Mario themes. Luckily, with Audacity, I can see where the notes are placed on the keyboard because it is a Midi file, but it can get a bit tedious to look at. Do you happen to know any midi reader I could use?
And, regarding structural progress, I have made a more rhythmical composition; includes lots of varying beats, even if it is ever so slightly. Any word on this (not yet completed) piece?

My personal advice is rather to record the songs from the source, separating the channels one by one.

I guess I'll say some things about it.
Most times starting a note with vibrato sounds weird, and it's best to have it at least about 2 notes after the start of a note.
Also, (if you didn't know this already) stopping the DPCM channel (1 key) makes a popping sound (how loud it is is different for different samples). You could just use a blank sample to stop the DPCM channel instead (I could make one if you want).
The pulse channels are also kinda quiet.
I like the drums though. :P
