Just finished this today, gonna post it here for some feedback (and hopefully improve it using said feedback) before throwing it up on YouTube.

So, any feedback is appreciated! Any at all!

Original song, for reference: http://youtu.be/S4dWMxTWTXE

Good stuff! I got a little Darkwing Duck vibe from this for some reason. [size=0.5](I think I might try to see if that could work out, but no promises.) Maybe it's the swinginess, and the noise sounding vaguely similar...

Iunno, maybe I'm just rambling. You did a great job, anyways!

This was on my bucket list of songs to cover or remix. Giving it a quick back to back listen in comparison the original, your cover seems accurate. I dig it!

I think if it were mine, I might've played with the vocal channel effects a bit. The human voice is naturally expressive and varied, the consistent volume and lack of even basic effects here like vibrato makes it a little tame in comparison.

I think I feel the same way as Gamma. Simplicity is usually good, but in this case it seems like this cover becomes a bit boring because of it. The whole song feels like the only instrument playing is a piano, maybe because the vocals don't stand out. Getting vocals to sound good in Famitracker is usually a difficult task IMO. But it is nice to hear something like this, I haven't been watching ponies lately. Good work!

Well the first thing I do when making any cover of any song is stick the original and my creation into Audacity, sync 'em up, and try to copy everything as directly as I can, so that's exactly what I was aiming for :P

Thanks for the feedback on the vocals; it's why I posted it here before YouTube. I'll probably do more of that Audacity comparing and get some of the vocal effects worked in.

Honestly, looking back, I kinda wish I had used a VRC6 square channel for the main vocals instead of the 2A03, since the larger variety of pulse widths would have helped with voice variation. Oh well.

EDIT: Now that I'm actually trying to incorporate the "vocals" in, if anyone has an easy way of swapping the channels it would be appreciated; it's looking more and more like the VRC6 would be quite a boon to the vocals, if anything to help differentiate them from a piano.

I've been working on "interestingifying" the vocals to sound more like... well, a voice. So far, I've worked on the vocals up to frame 06, along with some edits to the ending because I still can't get the damn tempo change right and it's SO AGGRAVATING.

In terms of what I changed, it's mostly just adding dedicated vocal instruments and a LOT of pitch bending. It still doesn't sound perfect, but then again a square wave isn't the best tool for singing.

Again, any commentary and suggestions are welcome!

A little bit better, but it still doesn't stand out from the rest of the channels. I think the problem is that you're using too many similar waveforms (25%, 31.25% and 37.5% squares + sawtooth) and the way your volume envelopes look like makes seem like they blend together.

When it comes to vocals, have you ever considered changing the duty while the notes are still playing? There are a few out there who use Vxx effects for vocals (I'm not really one of them), but it makes square waves slightly closer to vocals. Take a look at my edited module if you don't know what I mean. You don't have to do EXACTLY the way I did, it's just to give you ideas.

If you don't like the idea, I still recommend that you somehow use 12,5% squares for vocals, because the channel stands out a lot more compared to the rest.

Good luck!

(after doing the changes, it makes me wanna do my own version of this song, hehe...)

I'm enjoying what i'm hearing up to frame 06, these are some pretty positive changes. It sounds much more interesting this way.

I'm mildly curious as to what it may sound like if you used duty cycles on the VRC6 piano bits that were more audibly distinct from the one you're using for the vocal passages.

I really don't like the constant changing of pulse width. It's too jarring and stands out way too much for my tastes. However, taking Gamma's suggestion into account, I've tried changing the pulse widths of the accompaniment so they are farther from the vocals (using V03 for P1 and V06 for P2), and it's sounding better, I think.

I did keep the hard bass that was added to the triangle and sawtooth, with a small tweak on the sawtooth to make it less "chirpy".

Now, for the attachment, I did go through and "finish" the vocal editing, but it's currently 9:00 and I'm 100% sure I rushed through some important parts near the end because of tiredness. I'm gonna go through it again later, but for now here it is "almost complete".

You've done well! This is fun to listen to. It's good to see pony-related music around here.

Worked some more on the song; I now think it's in a state where I would be happy releasing it, but again I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Criticize or praise away!

I don't really have any criticism left. It sounds nice, and you did it all in a style of your own.
