Ive been making chiptunes for a while but im new to the FamiTracker forums<3<3 Anywho, i have always tried simulating "speaking" but it never sounds right haha

I know its possible because Chibi-tech does it! But ive searched all over and havent found anyone talk/blog about it or even attempt it!
If you have any ideas on how to do it or any examples of people making it that i can study that would be amazing!!!!

Hello and welcome to the Famitracker Forums

Well, the cheapest way is to just take a few voice samples, turn them into DPCM and just let the words play.
But if you're a chiptune masochist, you may want to create vocals with the FDS channel or - welcome to hell - with the N163.

8BitDanooct and flashygoodness have done a pretty damn fine job with the track attached below (NOT MINE!!). Just don't expect any better sound than a muffling potatoe if you decide to implement speech synthesis this way.

Good luck

Chibi-tech mainly does it through very precise pitch bending on square channels. This is achieved either with good control of the effects 1xx, 2xx, Qxy, and Rxy or by using lots of Pxx effects while on tracking speed 1 (F01).

It's not so easy to do it by memory, so it might be useful to have an actual vocal track that can act as your guide of what note to begin with and how to bend it.

This is not limited to square channels, and it can also be achieved with formant samples on FDS or N163 channels, but have in mind that it's still gonna sound very choppy.

also, change the Vxx duty cycle in the middle of "words" to try for a glotteral effect.

Generally use Vxx as a formant shift. Aka V00 for the highly nasal a as in "cat", V01 for the in between o in "dot", V02 for the low u in "food".

When you say "precise" you're not kidding! haha this is how ive been trying to do it (using 1xx, 2xx, qxx, rxx/ f01 pxx) and its so difficult! Maybe its something that just takes a butt ton of practice ughhhh... im almost done with my most recent attempt and i will post it on the thread soon

Another thing is Chibi-techs tone with the vocals, they sound more destorted than the standard square wave. I have a feeling she might be layering 2 channels, like [pulse 1 using V01-2 and pulse 2 using V00-3]

hmmm alot to think about.
