After a few months of learning Famitracker, this is the first time I've really achieved something I'm proud of. Working backwards with the .org file, I basically decoded Last Battle, singling out each individual track using OrgMaker and attempting to make an accurate cover of the song. The 'Echo' effect in pulse 2 from frames 07-0A may not be entirely accurate - even when singling out the track and slowing it down x3 it was still somewhat hard to figure out. Besides that, this song was easier than I expected.

I have a few other Cave Story covers in the works - Moonsong, Pier Walk, and Mimiga Village are on the way. I'm thinking I should just do all of the songs from that game- I love pretty much every song. I've also got a start on a few Megaman Zero and ZX songs that I plan to upload.

In the future, I may also post original songs for a game I'm personally developing. Expect heavy Metroid/Cave story/Megaman influence.

I would greatly appreciate any criticism or tips you have to offer.

Enjoy!

Hello and Welcome to the Famitacker Forum!

Now that's funny, "Last Battle VRC6" was also the first cover I ever posted here :D
So yeah, good to see a CaveStory/Megaman/Metroid fan around here - although most of us orpbably are ^^

About your cover: It works pretty well - better than my first attempt - but you can tell it lacks a bit of experience. Don't worry, though, that'll pretty much come by itself if you're persistent enough.
A few things that bug me are, for example, the use of the noise channel. A Snare shouldn't be Noise #3, usually it works like this:
0 - 3: Bassdrum
4 - 5: Kick
6 - 9: Snare
A - F: Hi Hat
[that's just an average guideline, feel free to experiment. But #3 is just a little too low for a snare sound].
Also, you might wanna change the VRC6 Pulses in the beginning to V01 or V02 instead of V00 because a single channel playing on V00 just doesn't sound right most of the time.
Another tip for the Bassline: You're currently using VRC6 Pulse2 only, also at V00 most of the time. The original Last battle had two bass channels, one octave apart from each other. You could emulate that trough making VRC6 Pulse2 play the 0-Octave (@ V04 or V05, try and experiment with the Duty Cycles a little more) and making the - entirely unused - 2a03 Pulse 1 play the same bass track one octave higher (mavbe at V00 or V01). Remember - there are 8 Duty Cycles on VRC6 and 3 on 2a03. Use them wisely ^^

So, good luck improving your covers, learning new skills and I hope you have a good time around here.

Hi! Welcome to the Famitracker forums!

I edited your track to clear up the mistakes. I like how you tried to be truthful to the original! (terrible edition is what I call of my edits, I'm not insulting you :P)

However, I recommend listening to Alexander. For instruments, I recommend 1 for the bass drum, 4 for a kick, 8 for a snare and D for a hi-hat, although really, with Hi-hats it depends on what volume you want them to be.

If you want, I attached a VRC6 version of this theme that I made a while ago that follows (most of) Alex's guidelines - feel free to check it out and see what I did to it.

Wait, really?

I actually had no idea there were 8 VRC6 cycles. This entire time I though there were only six. Guess I'm off to do some more experimenting/messing around!

Yeah - V00 (same as V00 on 2a03), V01, V02, V03 (same as V01/V03 on 2a03), V04, V05, V06 and V07 (same as V02 on 2a03).

Nope - VRC6: V01 is the same as 2a03: V00. I don't remember the 2a03 having a 6.25% Pulse setting

I love a good Cave Story cover. Pretty accurate, except...
The original has a different drum part from 07-0A. I feel like it's kind of important to the feel of that phrase, but that's coming from a percussionist, so maybe not a big deal to you.
Edited it in.

On a sidenote, this is the song that taught me how to do faux-echoing on a single channel

Here's a few things I noticed:

- You have some phase problems in spots, like pattern 01 between Pulse 2 and Triangle. This is easily fixed by slightly detuning one (or both) of the channels so they sound out of phase. (Be forewarned that due to the way FT handles pitch, tuning is more noticeable on higher octaves than lower ones.)

- You're missing an important note in pattern 09 Pulse 2. Since you have a free Pulse 1 channel at this point (in fact, why no Pulse 1 at all?) you should put it to work here if nowhere else.

- Keep experimenting with your snare arps. I agree that the snares sound a little low, and as a matter of taste, I'm more a fan of snares arping to higher notes than lower ones.

So here's a few minor edits from me:
