I've been obsessed with Neil Baldwin's works. He's one of the best NES composers ever. And I know that he used alot of tricks to get a very good sound out of the NES. Anyone who knows them, post them here.
Now, one that I've always been fond of his used only in Magician, the only time he's ever used DPCM. When ripping the game's samples, they sound absolutely nothing like how they sound in game. This is because instead of wasting space on larger samples for say, a snare, he would just take a higher pitch "thump" and lower it's pitch to elongate it. A few other soundtracks, like Panic Restaurant, did this as well.

...No wait, that's not how it goes.
Here's an interesting one: He composed the Lethal Weapon NES soundtrack with PAL in mind. For the NTSC version, instead of adjusting the songs to fit 60 Hz speeds, he added an extra frame every 5 frames so that both versions would sync almost perfectly*. This works because 5 frames in 50 Hz and 6 frames in 60 Hz happen in the same amount of time.
You can find some really interesting info about all of his NES works on [url=http://dutycyclegenerator.com]his website.
[size=1]*Because NTSC televisions had a refresh rate of 60.09 Hz, they can't sync completely perfectly.
I already do know about that website. I read it almost every day
However, there are alot of tricks that he used that he didn't mention at all in his website. Such as the one you just told me about.
