So since my cover of the NES version of Terra Cresta didn't go all too well, I decided to make this instead, and it resulted in something that sounds quite close to the YM2203 chip used in the first revisions, the only problem is those drums, they just seem to lack that "oomph". How could I make them better?

Unfortunately, I have no video to help you guys compare, since the FM YM3526 version was much more popular.

EDIT: Turns out this exists and sounds pretty close: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gddh1jz8-bc

I find it interesting that the FM portion was used for SFX while the YM2149 portion was used for the music. It's usually the other way around.

EDIT: it seems I am mistaken, it does use the FM, it's just that the YM2151 is very convincingly emulating a YM2149 SSG.

Yeah, it seems like the game also has samples, it's all over the place. Maybe they couldn't figure out how to produce music with the YM2203?

Heh, the arcade version DOES use the YM2203 though and it sounds exactly the same. The wonders of technological advancement, I guess.

That, or they chose to focus on SFX quality over music quality.

Anyways, attached is a recording of the YM2203 arcade version of the theme. Your cover sounds pretty close, nice work.

For the percussion, I see you have triangle, one pulse, and DPCM unused. You can experiment with using DPCM drum samples+noise, overlaying the noise hits with pulse or triangle, or a combination of these methods.

I decided to screw around with the noise drum volumes, does this sound a bit better?

Oh, I misunderstood. Thought you meant "oomph" in general.

Yeah, it sounds closer now.

Yeah, sorry, didn't know how to describe it. Thanks to everyone for the comments though.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I thought this was an interesting experiment. I wondered what that version of Terra Cresta would've sounded like if it was arranged more similarly to the later versions. So I added a few parts. How's this?

Some wrong-sounding notes (E B G# A# sounds more accurate than E A# G# A#), but nice. I would've either kept the arpeggio on pulse 2 going, or added a countermelody just for the sake of variance (and to keep pulse 2 from being simply empty).
