I have to say VRC6 by process of elimination.
2a03 only is nice and all, but it's just too narrow for many things. Plus, having to utilize the Triangle as a bass is just sad.
VRC7 is also pretty limited with it's pre-patches and only one custom instrument. It just doesn't give enough freedom of instrument choice.
N163 is really cool, but the whine with 7 or 8 channels grates my earls like nothing else and juggling with the wave addresses can be a pain when creating complex waves.
MMC5 is basically two more 2a03 channels, so nothing too fancy. Great for making more "authentic" music, though.
FDS ... well, it's got a great wavetable synthesizer, but only a single channel and the FM feture is a pain to utilize to a full extend.
SID - Gret, wonderful soundchip. Sadly not supported by FT, but you can emuate it pretty close with 3 N163 channels.
So yeah, the VRC6 got a rockin' Saw, two Pulses with 8 duty cycles and is overall easy and fun to use. So, that's why it's my expansion sound of choice.

I have to say 2A03 because that's what all models came with, and that's all you had if you wanted your game to sound the right way everywhere. But if the NES had been equipped with the audio pin, maybe we could've seen games with SID chips inside, that would've been cool! (I mean the 5B is like adding a Spectrum to the mix, so it could've happened)
For me it's either 2A03 or N163 (I voted for N163).
Mega Man is pretty much the reason why I like 2A03, because I grew up with that franchise (nostalgia herp derp). Anyway, 2A03 is somewhat limited, so if you truly want to squeeze everything out of that chip, it forces you to be creative with what you have.
But at the end of the day, I would probably choose N163, because every single time when I make something with it, it feels like I'm rediscovering the chip over and over again. I never get tired of that feeling
I wonder why you added C64 in there and not other hardware like... idk... Game Boy, ZX Spectrum, Atari etc. ?

I record (some) NSFs on hardware. Feel free to [url=http://www.famitracker.com/forum/posts.php?id=3633]request a hardware render.

Mine would be the VRC7, I suppose. Even though there are 15 preset patches and one custom patch to work with, when used properly with 2A03, the VRC7 makes for an excellent sound expansion chip.

I've been binge-listening to commodore 64 music lately.

It doesn't, I just put SID on for fun. Although I have seen hardware mods for NES that run the audio through a SID chip.
