Hello everyone! I'm going to be using this thread to share my works/introduce myself to the forum. I've been interested in Famitracker for a while and I just had to try it out. It has been great to use so far, and I am planning on making more originals and covers/arrangements for it.
I hope you enjoy my first piece, and I'd love to read comments/critique/advice if you are willing to offer any.
Very nice for a first piece. That melody is very catchy, very funky. Some neat chord changes too, and excellent use of arpeggios.
Am I right in thinking Disasterpeace was an inspiration? I dunno if it's just me, but some of this (in terms of composition) rings of some of his older rock-style stuff.

Thank you very much for your praise! Your feedback is much appreciated.
I've never heard of Disasterpeace before, but I've had a quick listen to some of his music now. Good stuff! I'll most certainly be listening to more of it.
Here's a WiP I'd like to share of Minnie's theme from Magical Tetris Challenge for N64/PSX. I'm not too sure on how I should handle the middle section of the track, I'm open to any suggestions/advice and of course any critique on what I've done so far.
I'll work more on it tomorrow, hopefully I will finish it by then.
It's true I have a background in music. I play the keyboards professionally and have studied music composition at college. I really enjoy writing and arranging music and Famitracker's a really fun program to use.
I'll try to take your advice on my leads on-board! Thanks very much for the feedback.
Also, I've now finished the cover of Minnie's theme! I'll admit I had a much harder time with the second half than the first half, I'm still not sure if should've tackled it differently. It also has slightly different mixing than the WiP so let me know if you think it's better or worse than before.
If you want a link to the original, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOAP9nBssZc
I actually have the game on GBC, which rearranges most of the soundtrack of the N64/PSX version.
This is really good =O
Anywhere we can go to hear your other stuff?
EDIT: I just listened to the cover, you definitely know your way around tricky harmonies!
Critique? iunno use slower arps? that's all I got really. Sounds great!
Damn, is this really your first famitracker work? I mean, I have a musical background as well, but this stuff makes my first attempts sound like the aural equivalent of preschooler crayon doodles.
I can't speak too much of aesthetics because it wouldn't be constructive or useful (e.g. I'm not a huge fan of triangle bass, but I'm not likely to convince anyone who doesn't have my ears of its supposed shortcomings). Technically speaking the harmonies are all pretty spot-on (a couple of imperceptible inaccuracies that aren't even worth mentioning), but there is one thing: You chose to embrace the triplet component of the backing harmonies, which is good because it makes a really nice cross-rhythm with the boots-and-cats, but it ends up losing some of the... "four"-ness I hear in the original.
I'd argue that the louder component would actually be the syncopated duple-time material (and it's made more interesting if you can clearly hear the complexity of the polyrhythm when both things are happening).
Though it would be orders of magnitude more work, I think it's certainly possible to capture that complexity with three channels. Whipped up a short example of when the harmony comes in after the few intro bars (muted the bass instrument so it's easier to hear); I know it's a mess because I'm a disaster and it didn't really turn out as well as I wanted, but hopefully there's some hint of the gesture I'm talking about.
Have a listen if you want, and welcome to the forums! Looking forward to hearing more from you.
Kulor, I am a big fan of your Alter Ego soundtrack, I still listen to it regularly today, and your works are definitely one of the reasons I got into Famitracker. I agree with the arps comment fully. Overall I need to experiment with different arp speeds to see what fits my pieces best. There's a link to my soundcloud on my profile page where you can hear some of my other stuff (some of it's better than others though). Including one called "tests" where I made a track using YMCK's magical chiptune plugin. Maybe I should try and remake that on Famitracker?
Ozzy, you are spot on with your comments on the backing harmonies. I did feel that the way I did them wasn't really how I wanted them to be done, but I didn't really know how to do them better, so I settled for triplets. Your edit is great! It is much closer to the original (and what I was aiming for) than what I originally had. I'll rework the cover at some point, using your's and kulor's feedback.
Lasty danooct1, thanks a lot for your comment, and also for your tutorial which got me using Famitracker quickly and painlessly.
The past week I haven't really done much, but for the time being, I'm working on another cover and I will post at least something from that tomorrow, whether it's done or not. I'm planning on making a set of originals as well, it might take a while, so I am definitely hoping to get back into the swing of writing music more regularly.
Here's something. You might want to put the kettle on for this
Just a quick cover of the EastEnders theme. I'm not a fan of soaps but the theme tune is catchy! I was aiming for something very simple, but I might expand on the cover.
