Hey guys. When I started using famitracker, i was using strictly the basic 2a03 setup. My leads would usually be around A or C in volume, and it sounded decently leveled.

Then i started using DPCM samples for kicks, etc. I found the sweetspot to be 8 for leads. They seemed too loud otherwise.

I've been working with VRC6 channels, for the past month or so, and i've found when i have all the channels going, even things higher than like 5 seem too loud.

Why is this the case, and for the various expansions, what do you tend to use for the volumes on your leads? I mean i've got an echo channel that starts at 2, and fades to 1 to match the lead at 4 and 2 respectively. It's just surprising.

Everything is relative to the mixing of DPCM/Tri and wholly depends on how loud you want them relatively. If they provide some accompaniment, then 2a03/vrc6 pulses I keep at around A-C, vrc6 saw can stay at C-E if using a low octave, or 7-9 when high octave. Vrc7 should be maxing C-D in high octaves and D-F in low octaves.

I haven't messed with namco enough to know off-hand how to balance.

Now, if you want something with BOOMING BASS, then volume 4-5 should be max for pulses, C-F for saw, A-C for vrc7
