I'm not asking like someone emotionally hurt but I have to know.

I made this html5 game end everyone complained about it. They said they were getting black screens, and the ones that did play didn't like the gameplay or the music. Good thing it was just a demo. Anyway I was wondering if I was tone deaf or something. Am I just writing sucky music and not realizing it sucks or something? Check the .ftm and please give some useful input ( by which I mean informative not uppity bullshit like "you could never measure up to the ultimate famitracker master race".

It's not horrible, but it is a bit amateurish. You might want to try using the vibrato effect (4xy) to give some more emphasis on the attack of the notes.

The percussion is kinda loud for my taste, but that could be the intention for all I know.

Finally, don't come in thinking your stuff sucks. If you have that attitude, people will take that attitude with your work and you might not get better. Always be positive, even if you acknowledge it's not the best thing ever.

EDIT: Yay for reading, I didn't actually realize that there was more than one song on the FTM... My criticism still applies, most of the melodies are generally unmemorable, and it would do you good to quiet the percussion and bring some of them up an octave.

If I had to give some general criticism I'd say that your instruments are kinda uninteresting. Consider playing a little more with attacks and decays, vibrato, duty cycles, octaves, etc.

Also, while you had some interesting ideas for chords, bass parts, and background riffs, I found your melodies somewhat unmemorable, which may be in part due to the instruments you used with them. I saw you using some Qxx slides in the last one, which is good; adding on effects like that and sprucing up your instruments will be helpful, but you may also benefit from taking some time to study melodies in music you enjoy and thinking about what makes them memorable.

The only other thing I noticed was some volume balancing issues; at some points it was hard to hear the bass, and at others the melody was drowned out by the background parts. In the sixth one "dokurorider" I felt that just by bringing the melody up an octave you could've made it more prominent without taking away from that excellent guitar-like riff that's behind it.

Hope this helped, good luck with your game

Here, hope this helps:

Shooter's Stage 1 - The beginning is pretty hard to follow, and the melody sounds out of tune.

Positive - Some problems with channel clashing and things getting muddled due to being close in pitch, but it has some good writing.

I must say I really like dokurorider!

calalalaoyster - It's easier to follow than Shooter's Stage 1, but it has the same problem of sounding sort of... atonal?

Mysterious Boss is pretty good!

Okay that is truly ironic since my original problem was using too many effects and I was trying to focus on the core of the melody. Is that ironic? I guess if you were a music teacher then it would. Ugh. New grounds is too harsh. They expect you to be a wiz in whatever popular subject matter everyone's into. And adult material. But they do get you views really fast. 200 in half a day. Guaranteed. Everything you upload will get noticed. But they're really snotty. Or snobby. Whatever.

Oh right. My music. I'm not discouraged. I just thought I couldn't tell difference between good and bad music. My brother said they're great. New grounds said it was mindlessly repetitive and offtune and such. You guys said ameturish. I just don't know anymore.

I actually like the percussion to be loud. That was intentional. Unless you were talking about the dpcm. Is it popping too much?

Shooter's Stage 1 sounds like you were trying to add accompaniment to 1942's in-game [url=http://youtu.be/cEYd9DY1D_s?t=7s]"music" (frame 06-08, pulse2+triangle). Thought that was interesting.

Dokurorider is definitely the best song in here, but I'm with the others in saying that none of the melodies throughout are all that memorable.

Neither are any of the songs in wolfenstein 3d but I love all of them. I was trying to sound like video game music in the classic ages mostly listening to old game music. I know the melody isn't as good as those games but I just wanted their ambience.

If you ask for honest feedback, it's best not to brush off or justify everything people say is wrong with what you've made. Take our advice to heart and learn from it! That's how you get good.

This, too, is a skill to be learned; oftentimes you need some time to mull it over (i.e. get over any initial shock from just hearing it).

Melodies can be hard ... I know because while I can hum original tunes in my head all day long, usually they're just nondescript series of accompaniment, basslines, and percussion and by the time I'm done nothing actually sticks -- I don't remember any of it beyond its general feeling.

Ooh, I feel ya there... it's very hard not to think of a song as my baby!
