Famicompo 6 has started it's voting process:
http://midr2.under.jp/compo/vol6/index.html
I have made mp3's of all the original songs (130 Mb):
http://www.kreese.com/slask/famicompo_6_originals.zip
If you find any bugs among the mp3's please report it to me!
This thread can be used to discuss the entries. Has anyone else contributed? I have one song among these, but will not reveal wich one until voting is over.
i've got four originals and one cover in there got my votes done for the originals and working on comments for them now. lots of really great stuff this year! competition is going to be very tight again
Why do so many people insist that having their Square channels sing/talk is cool? It's so creepy. I should make an original song where the channel is asking if it's creeping you out. It always does me :P..
That being said there are a lot of great works in there so yes. It's fun listening to a lot of the other things.
The ones where people simply put music loops playing back via DPCM shouldn't get very high votes imo.
Found 30 to be one of my favourites at the moment. Really feels like underwater sometimes.
Number 5 is worth mentioning too. Great tune!
Number 31 "Sintopia" use alot of DPCM stuff, but still amazing tune. Really great melodies and alot of cool stuff!
23 is amazing aswell. Hard beat, nice melodies!
Numver 21 feels too unreal. Using FDS, Namco and MMC5 at the same time. Why doing stuff that doesn't work for on a real NES/Famicom? Still a great song though...
I think 21's using way too much compression simulation. If i was made to be more subtle than it is then it would be believable. In the sound engineering field though, something like that would be considered "way too much" and it detracts from the song. I found the best part of the song was when the compression simulation stopped. heh.

You think Number 21's unreal? Compare to T kara S e (From T to S)(Original Entry No. 17) where every available sound chip that can possibly be used save for the FDS is utilized. The author even said himself that he overdid it with overblowing all of the available chips he could use (and with very good arrangement, too). It managed to win the Famicompo vol. 2 Original section.
There's also the cover from "Dead Ball P" on Famicompo vol. 5 (Covers Entry No. 15) where you have 2A03 + MMC5 + NAMCO + FME7 + VRC7. Unlike From T to S, this composition only got 10th place in the Famicompo vol. 5 Covers.
In other news...I noticed that Original No. 6 (PROG Area) is labeled as "Classical" but uses DCPM.
i wouldn't say it's unreal, really. it's remarkably easy to use multiple expansions. just as simple as setting all the flags and writing with a bunch more channels than usual :p i don't mind the big multi-expansion songs, sometimes they're cool, though when they're just used for a boost in polyphony it's kind of boring, no real extra technical merit to it. it's much more fun exposing the idiosyncracies of the different chips! there's many people who feel more strongly than i do though and won't even vote for songs with multiple expansions (which veers into snobbery to be honest.) regardless, multi-expansion songs don't have a competitive edge these days, if anything it puts you at a disadvantage as far as the contest is concerned.
#21 is pretty cool though i think, emulating side-chain compression that way seems a lot of work, interesting to hear it done in an nsf. there's a lot of good ideas like that in this contest. plenty of FDS "formant singing", which i must confess i'm a sucker for, not least as it's my favourite of the expansions. the usual repetoire of DPCMwank from Strobe, which always goes down well (and divides opinion undoubtedly!) entry 49 is just something else as well, craziest sound i've ever heard produced in an nsf.
#26 is my favourite track this contest though. pretty much hands down.
also those two looping dpcm tunes are surely joke entries :>
Can't say what's my favorite track, yet. Too much awesomeness in this compo. :D
Although most of the tunes you guys mentioned so far are also going to be pretty high up on my personal top list.
Also, #56, despite the square wave singing... or because of it? It's pulled off really well (as is to be expected from its author) and is just too damn funny to not like it.
I missed the compo somehow, so didn't contributed, and even haven't listened the works until now (originals only).
Most of works are good, I didn't liked at all only few of them. Besides of simply solid good tracks, here are few which are gotten my special attention:
5 - Nice melodies and solos, good sound, groovy bass, and all this in plain 2A03. Great.
8 - I liked hypnotizing effect of the main lick, and pushing feel overall. Triangle solo is nice too. Somehow reminds 'Born' movies theme.
9 - Wall of pulsating dark sound, effects, with some breakbeat. I liked it despite I don't like music with a lot of DPCM.
14 - Nice melodies, sound and drums. Also liked small breaks in the sound, which make accents on some parts of the melody.
21 - Yes, I think it is unrealistic for hardware NES, but really nice trance tune anyway, and great use of extension chips.
27 - Liked this one much, especially the melody, though I feel it missing second melody part.
28 - Nice and calm tune, reminds many of good old jRPG.
31 - This is most incredible sound from plain 2A03 I've ever heard. This one is my favorite in the compo in 'sound' category, for sure.
51 - Nice groovy tune. I also liked how triangle and sawtooth bass are combined.
53 - The sound smooth like silk, nice breakbeat drums.
Original #5 (let's shooting) - Who is Let, and why is he shooting? My favorite orignal of the compo. Anybody else notice the virt homage paid at 1:48? (virt-Across Rooftops from the FX3 album 03:17)
A Close 2nd for me was original #51(cherry drive) although the bass and string instruments bug me, I LOVE the melody!
I really enjoyed original #57(beard adventures). I felt it had great melodic content. I felt that some of the parts could have used polishing, however. The chords in 0:18-25 and the lead at 1:26, for example.
Another one of my favorites was original #10(a traditional childrens waltz). If you can get past the butt-metal at the beginning, the whole rest of the song is an excellent guitar solo.
Speaking about homages...
Do track #33 at 9:01-9:33 and the Battle Kid soundtrack (stage 1) both allude to some other tune I don't know or is it actually an (accidental?) homage to the BK soundtrack or perhaps the other way around?
Some of the material in #33 has been out for a while.
i'm more familiar with the cover entries now. some really cracking covers as well this year. more YMO covers than you can shake a stick at :D
favourites are 5, 17 (genius), 25, 33, 36 (majorly butty bassline), and 37. i already voted for both the originals and covers w/ comments, so i should probably avoid repeating myself too much.
and, about voting -- some people have encountered issues, myself included. i've explained in more detail here, but basically i wasn't able to vote on the covers after i voted for the originals (for some reason.) if you have this problem you might need to use a different browser for each form.

it's, unintentionally, the other way around... i released that song a good bit before the battle kid soundtrack came around
So many great entries in this compo.
My favourites of the originals are 14, 16, 21 and 23. 21 impressed me most.
For the covers, I like 1, 19, 29, 51, 54 most.
The intro in the original 49 pierced my ears and I was like WTF?! Though the music after the intro was quite decent.
I've created and submitted 5 covers for this competition.
Didn't had any ideas for a good original song to provide though.

49 is pretty impressive in my opinion, as all the "drums" are completely N106... the entire song is actually, no 2a03 whatsoever. the beginning sucks though, should have been quieter at least.
