If I turn on auto portamento, make a first note that uses clarinet patch, then make a second note that uses the flute patch, a weird noise is made. I am not sure if the bass guitar also behaves in an awkward way when I substitute the flute patch with it (I mean to say if that's how it's supposed to work).

Huh - that really is weird. Maybe it's because 3FF avoids the retriggering of the channel (as described here) and so, the parameters get messed up ... ?

I don't know if this has an official name, but I've taken to calling this technique patch sliding. It isn't necessary to key-off before changing patches and in doing so, you can get other timbres outside the 15 presets without burning up your custom slot.

I have tested the NSF export of the file on NSFPlay, VirtuaNES, and Nestopia and got the same overall results as played on FamiTracker. Now, I just need to know whether this happens on the real hardware as well.

I record (some) NSFs on hardware. Feel free to request a hardware render.

Once I perfect this technique, then I can say that I mastered VRC7 =)
It does.
Does this mean that this could possibly be an Easter Egg for the chip? Maybe.

Probably not, more like a correctly-emulated glitch

I don't understand how it's a glitch?
Choose patch, key-on, change patch, optional key-off. Expected behavior is that the timbre will change mid-note

Then this can be used to create "unofficial" patches, which really could make a lot of new possibilities arise for the VRC7.
