An instantly memorable boss tune from FFX that absolutely deserves a retro treatment.
I'm not quite finished with this yet, there are a few parts I want to tweak (plus the requisite cleanup), and I am choosing to do the song in only three channels (no expansions, Noise or DPCM channels allowed).

This seems pretty accurate, but (and I know you aren't finished yet) there's lots more you can do to enhance the sound design. Tons of empty space throughout you can use for dual-channel echo, "fattening" the triangle's sound with a pulse channel, strategically adding harmonies where there weren't before, doing Pxx adjustments to prevent the pulses clashing, and so on.

I generally try to avoid dual-channeling instruments. I'll do it for effect here and there, but it does use up an extra channel ... and to be perfectly blunt, I won't add echoing if I believe it doesn't belong in it.
I think it would be better if you showed him that.
I second the "show, don't tell" Sure, I may or not actually utilize anything but just knowing how to do the tricks is more important....
Right now the one segment I'm most unhappy with is patterns 0C through 0F. The original clearly has four parts here (melody, accompaniment, harmonic chords, and bass) but I'm only using three channels so I have to compromise something, and the loss harmonic chords really hurts it. I think I've found a solution, though, I can probably just move that part to Triangle....

Updated version. Mostly just tweaks, no major creative changes. (And not all empty space is 'unused' )
Piggybacking the accompaniment of patterns 0C thru 0F (see instruments 24 and 25) onto Triangle sort of worked but I didn't like how staccato it sounded, so I put it back on Pulse 2 and filled in its empty space with the harmonic note. Not perfect but I do like it better this way.
Ditched the arps in the opening sequence for putting Triangle in a lead role. Not a perfect solution either but it sounds waaay better than pairing both Pulse channels together and trying to make Triangle do all those sparkly opening notes (and I tend to just hate 0xx in general).
Still to-do: I want to split the openings of patterns 07 and 08 between both Pulse channels but I am not sure how.

Sounds a bit better throughout, and the bit at 0C-0F does work OK, though it and the arpeggio at 14-15 are a bit too high-pitched and ear-grating.
Anyway, I finally made some edits throughout (primarily to 13-17). Mostly dual-channel echo, but I hope this helps, and clarifies what I said in my first post.
The echoing effect really works for frames 14 aad 15. I also like the single-channel-faux-echo effect you added in 16 onwards.
EDIT: Whoops, forgot a P80.
Well, at least it wasn't a 4xx or A0x...
