As simple as the effect was, I think it made the whole thing sound a bit deeper. I've found a lot of Genesis and GBA games use this trick of backing up the more defined instruments with the 8-bit tracks so that the effects are audible in the mix but you can't really hear the 8-bit sounds specifically. It's a neat trick that sounds good in almost any situation.

Sunsoft style is too limited in my opinion, use DPCM bass and tri drums but with a fixed arpeggio instrument so that you can play other things at the same time.
