Well, you can try to view waveforms in Audacity and recreate the instruments in Famitracker, that's how I do at least. It takes time, but it usually pays off.

I had a Shower Thought™ recently, would it be better to separate waveform and volume envelopes for importing instrument samples into N163? As in, you take the original signal and perform an FFT (DCT?), normalize the output, and generate the waveform envelope by taking the sum of the N dominant frequencies (sum of sine waves). Then you generate a separate volume envelope by tracking how the sample's average volume changes every 1/60th of a second. Maybe it could allow for easier and better quality, I never was able to get the N163 importer to work well. Maybe you could even have separate FFT/DCT windows and generate an entire sequence of waveforms automatically this way.
