You know the "Row highlight" settings on FamiTracker's toolbar?
I currently have two problems with these settings:
- Because the toolbar doesn't wrap or scroll, these settings disappear if you size FamiTracker's window to less than about 800 pixels wide. (There seems no other way to control these settings.)
- These are currently per-file settings; they need to be per-song. (e.g. what if my module has both 3:4 and 4:4 based songs?) Then they can be relocated elsewhere where they're more visible (maybe to the 'Song Settings' panel.)
But why stop there? Row highlights are only a cosmetic thing, sure enough, but they're an extremely important cosmetic thing because they help you get your note timings right when scoring a song.
So here's an idea - a custom effect "Txy".
- First and most imporantly this has zero effect on how the song actually plays (NSF export, etc).
- Y dictates the logical rows-per-beat (default 4); this corresponds directly to FamiTracker's first highlight value. (Actual song speed/tempo, for now, is still calculated with 4 rows per beat regardless of this setting.)
- X specifies the logical beats-per-measure (default 4); X*Y correspond directly to FamiTracker's second highlight value.
- T00 returns these settings to their defaults (i.e. T44). Otherwise, only parameters >= 2 are applied.
So if you have a section of a song cut in 3:4 time, you could specify T34 and when FamiTracker encounters that command, it will adjust its display to highlight every 4th+12th row (instead of the default 4th+16th row).
I currently have an example where this would be useful: I have one song (at speed 06; tempo 180) where the introduction contains so many triplets it's easier to just ratchet my song speed down to F08 and arrange the section using 3 rows per beat instead of having to G02/G04 the whole segment.

I would much rather use another option, not an effect, since the highlights are module-wide anyway.

I can foresee a variety of problems arising with using an effect to dictate something that only pertains to the tracker itself (chief among which is the fact that it's inconsistent with what the rest of the effects actually do). poodlecock's suggestion would be more appropriate (or even better, just change the option to be track-specific rather than file-specific).

I record (some) NSFs on hardware. Feel free to request a hardware render.

This, please =)

The per-file setting will be changed to per-song setting, this is a flaw that I've planned to fix. Not in the next version but soon after that.
The settings toolbar should move to a new row if the window gets small enough, so that shouldn't be problem. Is there a reason you cannot make the window wider though?
Regarding adding a new effect, I'm gonna have to think about that.
I was about to suggest a temporary workaround to the inability to adjust those settings due to <800px via text import/export, but those settings do not seem to be part of the .txt format.

Settings toolbar doesn't wrap for me at all (Windows XP +SP3). It's kind of weird actually because the menubar does wrap while the toolbar does not.
But when I do video captures I tend to make the window smaller just so I don't have a lot of empty interface area occupying the video stream.

Maybe not an in-channel effect per se (which could get confused with actual song data), but just the ability to specify metadata for FT. In the case of time-signatures / row highlights, sometimes you do have songs that change meter....

Minor update - I just noticed that the BPM displayed in the FT's status bar incorporates the 1st row highlight when determining what constitutes a 'beat'. (Even though the saved song tempo is still per 4 rows.) That's actually pretty cool....
