Hello! I'm new to the forum and I wanted to post my first serious attempt at a Famitracker cover. Final Fantasy VI's soundtrack seems a but too ambitious for me, but I enjoy making these and want to know what everyone thinks!

Cool I guess, good job tc..

The arpeggios over shadowed the chords when the lead came in. I recommend lowering the arps.

I agree the arpeggios are too loud. Still, gotta appreciate how the loudest instrument is at volume 6, which is a good start if you're going to use DPCM on your music.

Always balance stuff so everything can be heard without any effort (well, it depends on what you're planning to do with your song, but you get the idea).

Also, Thom, that's entirely wrong, I think. The sawtooth channel actually has more volume control than the rest, it just works a bit differently but you can work with it like you do with the other channels.
Volume slide dont work on the Saw channel .It's like the triangle, it has little volume control. Correct me if Im work on this.
This is incorrect. In fact, sawtooth has the *most* volume control out of all the channels beside FDS.

While I do agree with what he said about the lead, I think that *everything* is too soft. While volume control is key to keeping harmony, raise the volume, there's no need to be afraid =D

EDIT: JINX!

Too much loudness creates too much distortion and imbalance. You need prioritize what's important.

The VRC6's sawtooth channel has a 6-bit volume register, allowing for values ranging between 0 and 64. Unfortunately though, due to the way Famitracker implements this channel's volume, only even values between 0 and 62 are accessible. You don't want to use values beyond 42 though, otherwise your sawtooth will turn into a distorted wave.

More info here.

Thom: please, for the sake of everyone here, refrain from talking about things you do not know about.

Wow, thank you for this information! I'll try and fix this and maybe add a bit more and update the thread, if that isn't against any rule I don't know of. I will also try and use this for other covers I have wanted to do!

Good to see some FFVI work in these parts, Trippin; relatively rare in this day and age. Volume balancing is always a major concern as the above comments mention, though I'm biased slightly in your favor in this case (I listen on an easily driven pair of BA IEMs, so everything typically sounds louder to me than most others; covers like yours sound pleasantly moderate at the volume levels I usually stick to, while covers erring on the louder side tend to destroy my ears and force me to turn things down...). Personally I'd also end the lead instrument (05) with duty cycle 5 or 6 and tweak the vibrato a bit, but I wouldn't argue for those changes all that strongly.

One other minor thing to note is that VRC6 Pulse 1 erroneously vibrates on the loopback because of the vibrato command you set before it loops. Not a big deal, but it sounds noticeably different the second time around because of the vibrato and it might be important to take note of for the future (if you don't intend for such effects to persist, remember to turn them off).

And, since nobody else has mentioned it yet, welcome! :-)
