Hey, artsy-fartsy Famitracker forumites!

My name's DragonDePlatino (DDP for short). I have 7 years of musical experience playing the saxophone but have only been composing for about 2 years now, so I really need some constructive criticism in that area.

Here are my first three Famitracker songs...

My first song is a 2A03 arrangement of "Department Store" from Earthbound Zero. My goal here was to embellish the lead by adding a unique 2nd part instead of just echoing the first. I also added in some triangle kicks, DPCM bells and lengthened the song a bit to reflect the SNES version. At one point, I'd like to redo the entire soundtrack and put it into a hack so I need to keep the file sizes as small as possible.

Second is another 2A03 remix...Sunset Colosseum from Pokemon Battle Revolution. After a fairly simple first song, I decided to push myself and try something more complicated. I had to throw out the base chords to fit the song into 2A03 but I'm fairly satisfied with how the runs came out.

Lastly is my first VRC6 composition, Castle Halls. With two remixes under my belt I felt comfortable enough with Famitracker to make an original song. The song would be for a medieval-themed Spelunky clone. It'd play while you're in the upper areas and loop a ton, so I tried my best to keep it from being repetitive. Feel free to add anything or lengthen it if you'd like.

Just keep a cool head and smile. People will only comment on music they like. Just look at some great covers around here. Great music but no posts.

Sorry.

I like the lead and the beginning few frames of sunset colosseum, but I dislike the precussion, and I feel like song you covered lacks direction.

I feel like the precussion in pretty much all the songs sound a bit off. I recommend you try to improve in that area specifically.

Your last song is sound in terms of composition but kind of bland to me, but I see what you were going for and give it a solid 7 gr8 job m80's out of 10 .

I went ahead and reworked Sunset Colosseum's percussion. I realized that the triangle kick of Sunset Colosseum should alternate between high and low, so I changed that. I also inserted another row of silence after the triangle kicks to fill them out a bit more. Percussion was lowered in pitch a bit and given a more dynamic volume.

Is this better?

Yeah, I enjoy that

Also I forgot to tell you that I liked the earthbound cover. Sorry if I sounded negative.

It's OK, mate. And speaking of that cover, I've improved it and started a soundtrack! I'm working on a Mother hack right now and I'm looking to rearrange the entire soundtrack. Attached are my humble beginnings, with Department Store (#12) and Snowman (#23) already finished!

More progress on my Mother 25th Anniversary OST! I've tweaked Snowman a bit, and decided on my final set of instruments. I know 6 instruments isn't a lot for an entire OST, but I'd like to keep things simple in case a hacker ever wants to put these into my project.

This update, I finished Battle 1 (#5). In MOTHER, it's a bouncy, jazzy tune that plays when you're fighting mundane enemies like smoking crows or rats. I gave a shot at extending the tune a bit and added some DPCM drums. But I'm still not happy with the new parts I added or the triplets of the last frame, so it'd be nice to have feedback in that area...Here's the original for comparison.

So, what? No one wants to talk about the third one, Castle Halls? Because in my opinion, that sounds impressive for an original.

...Mrpinci19? Huh? *looks up*
Ohhhh! The guy from Starmen.net! Fancy running into you here! Thanks for the offer, but I do weird stuff in composing (like short frames and speed 04) so it'd be tough to collaborate. As for Snowman, thanks! I never would have caught that! I went ahead and fixed a lot of my pitches, but kept some of the runs because I'm using 1-channel echo instead of MOTHER's 2-channel echo. I attached my changes to this post.

...Hee hee. I just quoted Quote. :D

Thanks! And I guess that's just the internet for ya'. Remixes and fanart always get more exposure than original stuff. But I don't blame people. I usually gravitate towards fanart myself.

EDIT:

Oh! I just realized the version of Castle Hall in this thread is an outdated one. Here's the newest version with some sweet new snare instruments I picked up from listening to Zaalan3's stuff.

After some more work on my Mother 25th Anniversary project, I think I can call Battle 1 (#5) finished! I wasn't sure on a lot of the chords the counter-melody created, so I reworked a lot of them and embellished the ending a bit more. I also decided to reorganize my instruments, renumber my patterns and trim down my file sizes since I'd like to use this for my hack. And about that...

I decided the best way to go about lowering the project's file size would be to shorten my patterns. So over the course of a few hours, I shortened my pattern lengths from 4 measures each to 2 measures (except for Department Store). I figured this would cut down on my the file's size by removing redundant patterns, but...

Old Soundtrack Size (4 measures / frame):
25.8kb FTM / 11.8kb NSF

New Soundtrack Size (2 measures / frame):
26.5kb FTM / 11.6kb NSF

*facedesk* What am I doing wrong here? How come when I shortened my patterns it actually INCREASED the file size?!? There's no way the doubled frame lengths would add THAT much data.
