I was playing around with my keyboard the other day, and i came up with a short loop that sounded quite catchy. I thought it would be pretty good for a shooter kind of theme, so i decided to make it into a song in famitracker. But the outcome was much better than i thought. Feel free to mildly criticize and give me suggestions on what else i should add (if you can). I played the nsf file and the only difference was the percussion was a little quiet. Try playing it yourself to see if there are any differences.
-edit-
i have made a slightly longer version which would be great if people could check it out.
It's a little slow and repetitive. When making music for a space shooter (especially when it's something like Gradius) you need to make the music exciting and catchy, because if the song that you hear in that one frustrating stage is really boring and repetitive it will get annoying quite fast. I made a quick edit (also changed the key) Hopefully it'll help you make this piece better.
You could really take a few ideas from these two above me--really awesome iterations of your song. Wow those DPCMs and weird Noise tricks? Really funky.
But don't worry, it's a matter of many things that you'll learn about as you begin to apply your music to music around you. Compare your music to the BEST and see what they do that you don't. And have fun!
Hope you don't give up on this song. Be inspired by all this talent around you, and show us what you've got. :)
Is it weird that TEHMEGAMASTAH's edit sounds a lot like one of my songs?
Thom, it looks like you accidentally pressed backspace. This sounds much better, and it's probably what you were going for.
Thanks everybody for all the helpful feedback. I have made some slightly longer versions at the bottom so you can see ive improved
You still not getting it. Try looking at our post and copy what we did there.
*Edit*
This is all for the second song you posted.(space_shooter_song_continued_edit.ftm) The first one seems to be the same
1.
Try putting the second square on the same octave of the first square(for the second song you posted).
And use two notes apart form the first square to make it sound like a chord.
Instead of this
G3 G4
A3 A4
C4 C5
D4 D5
Do this
G3 B3
A3 C3
C4 E4
D4 F4
It will sound better than doubling it with an octave.
2.
Give the triangle longer notes in the intro.
2.5
Use short volume values for the triangle latter on in the song. That way you can hear the triangle do the 16 notes(is that the right term?)
3.
Try using | 0 0 0 0 3 3 3 3 7 7 7 7 for the Namco 1 channel to make it sound like a chord
(some one help me with this if it doesnt sound good with some notes)
You may want to change the wave to a saw or square. A sine wave is better for bass more than anything else.
4.
The drum beats are kinda weird. Use simpler beats. The first beat falls on the first highlighted frame (00) and the second falls on the third ( 08 )
5. Try coming up with a lead. It doesn't have to be complicated. Just something simple and catchy.
This is where you want to learn your scales. I dont know what key your music is in. But Im guessing it might be in A minor(pretty common).
6.
Dont be tooo repetitive on your music. I am not really good at explaining this.
Someone who know basic song structure can better explain this
