THAT FAT BASTARD!
I've been playing Sonic 1 on my Megadrive lately ... now for the fifth millionth time I think ... ( I adore this game -^o^-)
And everytime I play it, I look forward to the Final Zone. The morbidly obere doctor coming from above and beneath, trying to crush your spiny skull, it's an epic fight. And all the while, this short, but sweet 16-Bit tune keeps your ears busy.
Although this cover in particular was already done many times (the best I can recall ist 8BitDanooct1's version), but I felt like doing something short beween other things.
So here it is, Final Zone on VRC6. May thou notice the splendit single-channel-echo on Pulse 1?

I'd love to hear a little feedback.
Thanks for your attention and have a good day
- Alex
EDIT: Bloody hell, why can't I upload the forsaken file??
Here's a dropbox link until my internet connection is done having it's period >_<

One big complaint here is volume. Everything is at full blast.
Another complaint is using releases. In the intro, all the notes play for too long. There are quite a few notes that hold that are supposed to be cut.
EDIT: Sorry for being so terse, but that's how I am sometimes I suppose.

No problem, I can manage getting criticised. I asked for feedback and there it is. If it is constructive, I'll try and improve myself according to those complaints.
1) Well, in that sence it's more of a remix than a cover. I seriously HATE cutting notes, it sounds so unnatural and sudden. I prefer a quick release or just letting the note finish by itself
2) Full blast? Maybe the file isn't the same, but 2a03 P1 and P2 are playing at volume A, VRC6 P1 is playing at A and only the lead on P2 is playing full blast
(aside from the bass and drums which - at least for me - practically have to be full blast. But maybe that's because my speakers aren't good ...)
What balance would you recomment?

I recommend not using max volume, like ever. Usually if you do that, one part of the song (mostly the bass, or the drums) is going to suffer. You can still have enough depth if you limit yourself to volumes less than 10 or 8, and that's especially useful for making the triangle stand out more if you have no expansion to work with.
Allright, thanks for the recommendation
I'll try and change it around a bit.
But still, triangle is my least favourite channel. No volume, no different distinct voices, weak as a bass and only useful to enhance dhe drums - which falls flat on the face if you're using good DPCM

You dont have to use it if you dont like it. I would personally use a higher octave with the tri to make it stand out more.
It depends a lot on your speakers. Whenever I'm listening to NES music on my laptop speakers, the triangle is almost completely gone, but at my desktop with the speakers, the triangle could make the house go down if I wanted it to. Volume balance is also very important. Listen to Tim Follin music, or [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhDC-VStQmU]THIS
For the most part this track doesn't go higher than 5 with the pulse volume. But if you really don't like the triangle for bass, try using it as a flute, and give it a 50% pulse echo with a volume of 2 or 3. Usually you don't hear things like that in games.

That's why in techno music you use both low and high pitchy bass so you can cover for all type of speakers.
