I've recently been working on a cover of Forest Rain's song Hay Ms Derpy using the VRC6.

It's kinda my first time really using all the channels fully (like properly using DPCM and noise to make coherent drums), and as you might notice it's still a WIP. I've tried my best to accurately recreate the original song, using a combination of syncing a .wav output in Audacity to the original and using a MIDI file straight from the original author to get the non vocal notes right.

Hopefully I'll remember to post updates here as I work on it, or at least the final song.

Original song by Forest is here: http://youtu.be/qzPXd5SR4fw

I hope my bleeps and bloops are pleasing to your earholes, and if not, I'm open to suggestions! I am kinda new to this after all...

I like it, but I feel there's some things that could be worked on. You don't mind if I edit this a little, do you? I'll, of course, post a response when I do.

Alright, so here it is. A few things to note:

-It isn't anything big and it didn't bother me much, but I changed the envelope of the pianos to just have the fade-out. Gives it more of an attack. Also moved the first frame up and octave to match the song.
-I made new instruments for the cymbals and snare, mostly because I was just messing to see what felt the best and didn't want to screw up what you already had.
-Just as a thing, I always have the DPCM D-counter set on something (usually 0.) This gives your samples a little pop and makes them noticeable.
-In Frames 04-06, I gave the lead to Square 1, and Square 2 got the backup synth that goes along with the lead guitar. Backup guitars (VRC6 Squares) have a pulse width envelope-thing on them.
-The lead guitar is basically just a straight lead with random width changes, to kinda emulate the sound an electric guitar makes.
-The VRC6 channels and Triangle have slight pitch changes so notes don't stick together and make that awful sound two notes make when they're on the same exact pitch.

WOW.

Going over it, I did make a couple of changes of my own. Most notably, for (only) the vocal parts starting at frame 09 I went back and swapped the instruments to my original "no attack" piano. The vocals work much better with a lead in on the volume rather than an attack.

Also, consulting the original song by syncing wav files in Audacity, I allowed the sawtooth at the end of frame 10 to get much louder with an A10 to kind of fill in the drum roll and not make it so blatant. (By the way, I highly recommend syncing the wav to the original song. It actually sounds really good regardless)

I never even knew what the DPCM D-counter did, let alone tried using it. I guess you learn something new every day. :P

Thanks for the help! Now to finish this thing. :D
EDIT: probably should have included the FTM XD

still digging it, it's very pop-ish and it's got a satisfying conclusion! you seem to be intimately familiar with the genre in which you composed the song.

It's more that I'm intimately familiar with the song itself because I like it so much, and that I was continuously comparing my version to the original the entire process.

After every single frame I finished, I exported a .wav file and synchronized it to the original in Audacity, If something sounded even a little bit off (especially the vocals), I would go back and modify it.

And your comment about the ending makes me feel so much better. I kinda felt I rushed it because I was so close to finishing that I just wanted to be done, you know? I went back and tweaked it about, like, 5 times before I finally posted it to YouTube. In fact, I'm not completely sure that my final one here is the final one that's on YouTube for that reason. I should check that. If this has an attachment, it is the absolute final version. If not, above is the final. Cheers!

EDIT: Yep, above's the final version.

ah, i admittedly glossed over most of the original post and mistakenly assumed you composed the song.

still a neat cover...
