Okay, technically this isn't a problem -- it's a misunderstanding. First time experimenting with this effect in a song and the results (while technically correct) were completely not what I was expecting....
The pack-in help file says only this about effect Axy:
It doesn't describe what 'x' actually is/does. See, with other effects like note slides (Qxy/Rxy) the documentation is clear that there are two settings - 'x' for speed and 'y' for depth (and the documentation for each labels them as such). The problem I have is that I thought the A effect was for sliding smoothly to a desired volume level (in the same way that Qxy/Rxy slide to a desired note) and the 'x' here was the new volume level (or 'depth') to slide to -- nope, turns out it's actually the speed! (You can't specify a depth at all.)
So effect A0x actually slides the volume up from its current value to F (full), while effect Ax0 slides the volume down from its current value to 0 (off). In other words, it's not the volume version of a note slide at all, but a volume 'fade in' / 'fade out' effect.
Maybe the help file could be tweaked a little to clear this up? E.g:

Actually a slide with depth would be a cool addition, especially if you want to fade in with an effect and want it to stop at a certain volume and not when you have a row coming with a stop command on it. Just like how Qxy and Rxy work.
