I'm new to the forum and still quite a novice with famitracker. Here's my first attempt at a cover. It's track 16 (the password) from Tombs & Treasure. I always really really like this one so I did my best to cover it. I could use some help getting the instruments right especially for that haunting echo sound. I'm pretty sure it's to do with the pitch but I can't get it quite right. Any advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance for any help.
I paid attention to that echo sound, i'm not really advanced on that technique but i can hear the "can't quite get it right" problem, but still it sounds good to me.
One thing i've noticed in the original is some notes are cut on pulse 1 (frame 00 and frame 01 only )i guess in order to let the echo ring more clearly ...
Also the end of frame 01 on Pulse 02 the B notes are on the "and" of the beat and two eight notes are added.
so i 've put them in the ftm files if you don't mind.
Hope it helps and someone will help you for the echo thing but it sounds very close to the original to me.
I don't know the original song, but when you want to echo a melody, always detune the echoing channel with a Pxx effect so the notes won't blend.
I modified the file and placed P81 effects on the Pulse 2 channel, maybe that's what you're looking for. P80 is normal pitch, P7F or less will lower the pitch and P81 or more will raise the pitch of the note.

Awesome, thanks for the replies guys. Yup, it definitely sounds much better now. Those tips are exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. Thanks again!
...glad I'm not the only one happy to welcome another new member here. I recently heard the original and, while this isn't a direct copy, it sounds pretty good AND this is from you treating yourself as a "novice".
I think we've answered your pitch question, but I want to add on to what Dr_Mustache brought up. With the Pxx effect, it's best to leave it at P80 when using higher pitched notes--just a future reference from some previous experience. It just doesn't sound right in the end.
All of the welcomes and I hope to see some good work out of you in the future ^_^

Thanks for adding more information to my post PaulMannIV.
Pitching has a very special way to work. You will notice that the pitch resolution is higher on lower pitches but it's really low on high pitches.
This means that if you apply a P81 effect on an A-1 note you won't notice any difference, but if you place a P81 on a B-6 note, the pitch difference will be enormous.
Experiment with the tracker and you'll learn a lot of how it works in general. Also, welcome to the forums, I was a bit rough on my last post but I hope you don't mind!

It depends on the expansion used, but yes, this is generally true.
Welcome to the forums! What you've done so far is good, and that you say that you're a novice is... I have a feeling you're gonna be really good!
I went ahead and made a few edits. If you need to know, 4xy is the effect that adds vibrato.

I'm going to add that, on frame 02, if you want that echo to continue happening, you need to reset pulse2's volume to F.
At the end of frame 01 you drop the volume down way way low, and never bring it back up, but you wrote it like it's supposed to sound like the first portion when the channel volume was still at F, the default and max volume. Velocity? whatever.
And cool stuff about that detuning echo business. I had no idea.It does a cool phasing thing, where the two overlap, or rather, where the point in which they overlap moves.

Here's a second cover I did, this time for track 13 (the overworld) from Legacy of the Wizard. I took the good advice for the changing the pitch (p81, p7f) slightly from my last cover to get that cool echo-y sound here too. I think it's close enough to want to share but any advice and critique is welcome. I'm including a WAV of the track in case people haven't played it.
Cheers!

Just go back and edit your first one. We get that you're new, but just please look at the options in the top right corners of your post. You'll see an edit button, and it comes in very handy.
I did a little edit for the first song in this thread... if only I had scrolled all the way down first! Twas fun tho. The continuous sound was really bugging me, so I cut a lot of notes short and changed the echo, and then got a little carried away haha.
The legacy of the wizard track sounds real nice! Only problem I have with it is mainly the higher-pitched notes playing together and how you tried to pitch them apart. It didn't work so well. Perhaps it'd be better to try a 4xx effect or something. Remember what the other member said about not using the Pxx effect on high-pitched notes? That would be something to take note of mate!
