With 900 bpm modules having drastically risen in popularity over the past couple years, I thought I'd revive a pretty cool friendly competition (or I guess "challenge" is a more appropriate term) we had a long time ago: make a module that sounds as good as you can make it sound, using the slowest possible tempo in Famitracker (speed 31, tempo 32), or something as close to that as possible. You may never change the speed or tempo using Fxx at any point in your module.

That's it! That's the only rule. Your module can be as short or as long as you wish, you may use any expansion (or any combination thereof), and you can use custom refresh rates. If you have any questions regarding what you may or may not do, feel free to ask (if you're unsure, it's probably allowed).

This should serve as an exercice on how to make complex instruments, and teach you not to always rely on the pattern window to get the sound you're looking for. Also it should be a pretty fun challenge!

There is no deadline, there is no limit on the amount of submissions per entrant, and there is no prize. Just have some fun, and share whatever you end up with! I suppose people can vote for their favourites and I'll keep an updated list of all the entries later on, and mayyyyyyybe I'll record the best ones on my hardware if I feel like it (assuming they're compatible with my gear in the first place).

[url=https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/34026765/slowbossbattle.ftm]Here is a short example of what I have in mind. But bear in mind this is just an example; feel free to be as creative as you like with the limitation!

Looking forward to hear what you guys come up with. (:

That was sorta my goal for Democompo 5. This track only does speed 26, but it exceeded the maximum temo allowed in the Famitracker beta version out at the time!

ticks/row = speed * (150 / tempo) = 31 * (150 / 32) = 145.3125

if we relaxed the requirement to speed 30, tempo 36, we could get an integral tempo at 125 ticks per row (not sure if this is the slowest possible integral tempo, this is a diophantine problem, but I if it's not it's very close).

I have confirmed, speed 30 tempo 36 is the slowest integral tempo.

Python 3 program attached if you want a complete list.

Edit: attaching a .py file does not work with this forum, here's a pastebin instead:

Yeah that could work! I guess any insanely slow speed is fine, really. :p

EDIT: Is this the kind of module you want?

That's still a little bit fast, but yeah something like that! Also has originals in mind more than covers.

Don't give up yet! It's possible to achieve pretty good stuff if you're prepared to get creative. Here's [url=https://www.dropbox.com/s/5j3f2i7wmknciuk/lonely_proton.ftm]gyms' entry from last time around. As you can see, this one relies on effects much more than instruments.
