Hello all.

I'm new to the forums, but I've been using Famitracker for about six months now. I've created a number of practice tunes but up to now haven't posted anything. So this is my debut. These tunes come from two of the Game Boy Mega Man titles, in particular 2 and 4.

Track 1: Mega Man 4 Title Screen
Track 2: Mega Man 4 Robot Master Select
Track 3: Mega Man 2 Robot Master Select

Tracks 2 and 3 were more practice than anything, but the first track is my real submission. Comments are very much welcome! Please enjoy!

This is excellent so far! You've almost got the notes spot on with these songs. A few tips I have with the Mega Man 4 Title Screen, would be to listen closely to the original tune again. Just a few notes that are different, but the songs already resemble the original versions closely. Another thing, by the 4th pattern on the two square channels, the notes should have a duty cycle setup, so that every time the note hits, the duty cycle changes from 50%, to 25%. MML would read as "2 1", with a length of 32 ms. The last thing I'm going to add, is that I would recommend not using the default effect for vibrato, but try to replicate the sound from the Game Boy in the instrument editor. Other than that, keep up the good work!

Well part of my idea on that first tune, and I guess it might be a misnomer to call them a "cover" exactly, but to me the Game Boy version of this tune in particular just sounds kinda, well... "plain". And what I was going for is something a bit closer to the style seen in the NES Mega Man titles. So that's why the slight differences in some of the notes, drum patters, etc. on that tune. Still, I will check out the duty cycle changes and all per your suggestion.

The other two tracks, however, I tried to keep a little closer to their original versions, not altering them very much.

Of course all are still works in progress so I'll be editing them a little more as I go along, as well as uploading some more tunes (some original, some not to much).

I'm going to listen in on this later today, but until then, I figured I should tell you that the Game Boy titles are usually numbered using roman numerals, i.e. Mega Man 2 on the Game Boy is usually called Mega Man II to distinguish it from the NES game. Although since most people don't use this consistently it doesn't help much.

Said game has an amazing soundtrack that is amazingly poorly programmed. The songs are all (well, nearly all) awesome but they sound like crap, especially the drums. Looking forward to listening to your cover, but can't right now...

Precisely why I wanted to "NES-ize" the tunes and make them a bit closer to how they could've been done on the NES in the style of the Mega Man (and other Capcom titles) that appeared on it. I love the soundtrack to the Game Boy Mega Man titles, but none of the tunes seems quite right. Especially those from Mega Man II. They're too high pitched for my taste, and as you said, the drums just don't sound quite right. It's stuff like that that I'm interested in "repairing". :D

Yeah, that too, everything is octaved up, and the instruments are generally really boring. Some of the songs are actually quite painful to listen to. But the first and 3rd games in the Game Boy line have excellent music, though naturally due to differences in hardware it doesn't sound quite like the NES stuff, for better or worse.

Your cover of the Mega Man II song is a little off, but it sounds nice.

I have made pretty accurate midi covers of all the Mega Man II songs - if you want them I can send them to you to facilitate the process of making NES covers.

Sounds great. I'm just having to work on these things in my spare time, which is probably going to get to be a little less since I have a new job starting soon and I'm trying to spark up a relationship with someone from around here where I live.

But in between all that I should still find some time to work on some of that, and I can use all the help I can get!

Ok, I haven't put all that much time into ensuring the note lengths are exactly the same as in the gbs songs. Volume levels are also not well adjusted, and the tempo is not exactly the same as in the gbs.

As for drums - it's often difficult to make out when there's a snare and when there's a hihat, so sometimes there might be a snare in the midi when you would think it could just as well be a hi-hat or a kickdrum.

There are no toms in the megaman II soundtrack, but there are some strange passages in it where it sounds like the composer is making a poor attempt at it. Since they don't sound like toms at all, I didn't make them toms in the midi either.

I've only included the sounds that I could actually hear in the GBS into the midis (i.e. I haven't added kick drums to a song that doesn't have them in the GBS), and I've only included crash cymbals, hats and open hats when I've been certain the original composer intended a sound to be such a thing. I also haven't added any new notes. In short - don't rely on the midis for anything but rhythmics as far as the drums go.

I'll let you start out with these. Good luck!

Also, in case anyone cares, I've made some unfinished "remixes" of these themes: Title Theme (guitar played by sirGareth), Stage select

So you're not trying to make it sound just like the GB? OK, I get it. If you're going for an NES style, then forget what I said about the duty cycle, since the NES Mega Man games didn't do that, as far as I know. In this case, try to listen to how the programmers used the vibrato effect in the NES games, and follow that.

While that's true, remember, the US title screen for the NES Mega Man 2 was numbered in roman numerals. Though, in the case of rockman_x_2002's NSF, I don't think it matters, because a mixture of the Japanese title(Rockman World) is in the name, as well.

True. The convention of using Roman numerals for the GB games is a later idea.
