Hi guys, today I downloaded FamiTracker because I really want to start making my own music. I know it's going to take me a while to and I don't really care how long it's going to take, but I will not give up like a lot of other people do.
The second song (well actually it's more like 51 of bullshit) I made wasn't really... great. After this "song", I tried to make some other songs, but they all came out bad.
I know the basics of FamiTracker, but to learn more about it, I wan't to "copy" my favorite songs because I have totally no feel for music.
How I really don't know how to do this. I always just press random buttons on my keyboard because I have NO CLUE what all those letters mean and what the position of them is on my keyvoard.
So yeah I basicly want to make for example a REALLY basic tetris theme on FamiTracker but I have no clue how to start. Help me?
You'd better to learn what all those letters mean first. Start from reading the music theory basics. Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music and every linked article about every term unknown to you. For now you don't have to understand everything completely, you just need to build up some background knowledge.
You also must understand that there is no difference between 'learning how to make music in FamiTracker' and 'how to make music in general'. FamiTracker is simply sort of musical instrument, nothing more, so to use it you have to understand same things as with any other musical instrument.
Ok, thanks for that answer, but I know those things are notes, like sort of... like on a guitar. But, I don't know where to find those on my keyboard.
I can see that E-^ are a line of notes going from low to high. The same with X-;
But then we also have Z, M, W and those keys on your keyboard. They look like they randomly play a note. I really don't get it.
I do get that some keys like some numbers and the row on your keyboard with the g,h,j etc are the "black keys" from a piano. But there is really no logical structure I can find there. Help?
Imagine the single octave of the piano. 12 keys from C to B, 7 of them are white (C,D,E,F,G,A,B) and 5 are black (C#,D#,F#,G#,A#).
On computer keyboard those keys mapped in that way so it's placed similar to real piano. White keys are bottom row of the keyboard - Z,X,C,V,B,N,M, and black keys are middle row: S,D,G,H,J. There is also second (upper) octave on top letters row and numbers row, mapped in same fashion.
Simply look to keys Z,S,X,D,C,V,G,B,H,N,J,M on the computer keyboard, and you'll see that their layout is same as piano keyboard.
This is very common standart for every modern music software, and it is actually very easy to understand.
Edit: look at this.
Well, I have to give your post a second look in a few minutes, but I already see 1 of the problems why I couldn't understand the keyboard function.
I have an AZERTY keyboard. And my Z above my S and my M is next to my L. I coudn't understand why they placed those notes so random, but now I understand that my keyboard is just different.
Is there a way to change the default set keys because as you can imagine, this is verrrrry confusing. Even more because I never played an instrument and you know.. it just makes it all even harder :p
As far as I know there is no remapping note keys in FamiTracker for now. However, you can change settings of your keyboard in Windows, or use MIDI keyboard (hardware or software one).
Basically you have to train your ears to determine notes pitch and durations. This is not easy, it takes years of practice. So, for now you can start from simply 'converting' or 'translating' (don't know the right word) music from one form of notation to another. For example, you can take staff (note sheet) of some composition and translate it manually to letter notation used in tracker. You also could do same with guitar tabs or MIDI files (not importing them directly!). If you want to recreate some NES music, you could use different software to analyze the music (while you aren't able to do it by ear).
This process will help you to train your ears, learn different notation systems, and some musical language (sort of 'words' or 'phrases'), which will be useful for you later, when you will make your own music.
Hey, thanks for the answer. Now that I have the good keyboard (yey!) I will try that out. And yes, I know it will take me long, but I am aware of that. Thanks for the tips and don't be afraid, importing midis doesn't work anyways
