I've had FamiTracker for about a month. Just came to the forum in hope that some of the expertise will rub off on me. Great program, love chiptunes/8-bit games/pixel art etc.

And here's the only thing I've made more than ten seconds long:

Also, I'm sure there's a vast sea of things I'm neglecting but really any criticism/tips are a great help.

Welcome to the forums!
I think this is quite OK for a first. I think you should try working on making things less
dissonant(ie learn basic chords). If a note is less than 3 half steps
above or below anpther note, its not going to work. For example, E doesnt work with D,D#,F, or F#.
Copy paste this address into your browser to learn a bit more.

Solid advice but, just to be pedantic, whole-tone harmony can sound good in the appropriate context, i.e. [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspended_chord]suspended chords.

But anyway, this is a decent first go but the progression feels a bit random and the tonal quality shifts a lot in places, so yeah, learning about chords would be good. Another important concept is [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadence_music]Cadence. And don't forget [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mode_(music)]Modes.

I agree with robro, but I thought it had some volume control, but still not enough. It sounded a little harsh on the ears, so I lowered the volume and changed instrument 01 to be a 50% pulse (Duty 2/V02) instead of 12.5% pulse (Duty 0/V00).

I think the dissonance in this actually works pretty well. Music theory isn't law. I would suggest toying with instruments and effects to make something that doesn't sound so basic. Listen to projects that others have made, such as the ones in the demo folder, find the parts you think sound especially cool and examine them to see exactly what they're doing with effects and instruments.
