I'm fairly new to fami tracker and I have two questions.

First, how do I create a "horziontal bar" that I see on other people's compositions (seems to cut a note short).

Second, I can't figure out how to use the Zxx command to change the triangle volume. When I use it there seems to be no effect. Can someone explain how to use it?

Thanks!

Also is there any good resource for general theory of how NES music was produced / how fami tracker creates sounds so that I can try to understand some of the technical terms I see better? Right now I mostly use other people's instruments or mess around until I figure out something that works but I can't really mold things to exactly they way I want them.

Hi and welcome to the forums. That horizontal bar is a note cut. By default, the key to place it is "1", but you can define it from the preferences. Go to "File > Configuration" and find the field where you can set the key you want for a note cut.

The Zxx command must be used from the DPCM channel. It sets the delta-counter to the level you want. A lower Zxx (like Z00) raises the volume of the triangle and noise to the max, while a higher Zxx (like Z7F which is the maximum parameter for the effect) will lower the volume of triangle and noise.

Look at the [url=http://famitracker.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page]FamiTracker Wiki to find many tips for your compositions, as well as other miscellaneous stuff about the 2A03 sound and the other expansions.

EDIT: I forgot to say that using the Zxx effect will create a loud pop if the gaps between values are too great (like jumping directly from Z00 to Z7F).

Wow, thanks for the answers. I was able to get the Z command to work. Is the default value Z00?

Unfortunately typing 1 didn't work to create a note cut and I don't see an option for selecting a note cut shortcut where you mentioned.

The default value is Z00, you're right.

Make sure you place the cursor on the note field when you want to place a note cut. Look at the attached image to see where the option is located. You click in the text field and press the key you wish to use as the note cut command.

You're welcome, glad you found it now.

One last thing, you may also check out the FamiTracker help file, which also has more details on how the program works. There's an effect list with their descriptions and valid parameters, so that'll help you too.
