Um... I decided to make this cover after the [url=http://famitracker.com/forum/posts.php?id=4133]older thread got bumped. I tried to make it as accurate as I could and making it sound good at the same time. It uses the same style that the older MMBN covers had, except it's improved because I've learned a lot since then.

That was quick

Anyway, I think you should have used sine kicks (DPCM or FDS), those might fit better, but I'm not sure.

Well, I have access to the samples and I could extract them easily, but since I wanted to make this in the same style that I used previously (VRC6, triangle and noise percussion, no DPCM due to not knowing how to use it at the time), I did it this way.

And yeah, it was quick! I do this stuff rather quickly most of the time.

oh, ok, then I guess you can ignore my post

I tend to put very much time on my famitracker stuff because I want to make sure the song(s) sounds good. I guess it's a gift to do things quickly =P

Don't worry! I always welcome suggestions and comments.

Also, I think that whether you work fast or not is just a matter of how you are used to create your music. I work fast and well (most of the time, since I'm slow sometimes), while others put more time to make them sound good, but it isn't too relevant. As long as it works for you, then it's fine!

Wow shit those drums are very oomphy! I might have to replay this game some time.
As for DPCM drums, you can import the ROM file itself in Audacity as RAW data (signed 8-bit PCM), and find the correct sampling rate. Somewhere in that huge mess you'll find the sampled sounds of the game.

Hah, thanks for the comment.

I had read something about importing the ROM file as RAW data to get the samples, but it didn't work quite well for me, maybe because I didn't use the correct sampling rate, but I can try again. :D

I should also play these games again, I have wanted to do so for a long time.

Why not just rip all the instruments by using GBAMusRiper? That method works to some games that uses Sappy (I assume Mega Man Battle Network 2 uses it).
Or is this method bad for some reason?

The problem I found with GBAMusRiper was the fact that it exports the instruments as soundfonts (SF2 format). The MIDI files for each song are exported from the ROM and you can open them in a tracker of sorts or other programs, but they don't sound good due to not having the instruments the original songs have.

There's a plugin for foobar2000 that makes this combination work right, but I'm not too fond of it. I haven't found a way to mute the MIDI channels in it (maybe I haven't looked in the right place, actually), and about ripping the instruments and samples, I assume I must do it from the SF2 file, but I don't know how.

I think MMBN2 would work with this too, so I can try it. I tried this program with Sonic Advance 3 and it works great, but due to the things I explained above, it doesn't work very well for me if I need to extract samples or stuff.

You can export them as .wavs using [url=http://www.synthfont.com/Downloads.html]Viena.

Nice cover btw, very accurate.

You can use a program called Viena that opens .sf2 files and you're able to view or export the samples as .wav files.

(EDIT: goddammit Shywolf! I wanted to post first :P)

As with "muting" the channels, you can use a program that can edit MIDI files and just delete the channels that you don't want to include and then play the MIDI file with foobar2000 or something. I highly recommend you create a copy of the original MIDI file so you won't lose the other stuff.

I actually have no idea if you're able to mute MIDI channels with foobar, but the method that I just mentioned above works.

There, I installed Viena and I'll try it now. Thanks!

Nice method Warheart, it surely works since having only one of the channels present in the MIDI file counts as channel splitting. I didn't think of that, so I may try it someday.

Also, thanks for the compliment Shywolf!

The "NSFImporter" of GBA songs...

I forgot to ask, are the Mega Man Battle Network games any good? Which game should I play first?

All MMBN games add or remove something to the overall gameplay. The gameplay has you running around in two different worlds, the real world and the cyber world. In the cyber world you find enemies and fight as Mega Man. You get to choose a combination of "Battle Chips" that serve as weapons during a "turn", where you fight against viruses and stuff.

[It's a pretty rough explanation, but watch the linked video at the end of this post]

I highly suggest you start with the first one (Mega Man Battle Network) and then make your way up to the rest, so you don't get lost in the whole plot. Also, the first MMBN is the simplest one, since many features that are present in future games weren't present in this one.

MMBN2 and 3 are pretty good, 6 too. The worst one, in my opinion, is MMBN4 because the game feels like there's too much filler with tournaments and stuff, but it's fun if you can get past that problem.

I think the whole series is pretty fun and good, despite what other people say about them. Maybe these games get bashed a lot because it doesn't retain the classic Mega Man feeling, but as stand-alone games they are great. Try them out and you'll see for yourself!

[url=http://youtu.be/xdoarfd-b8w?t=3m10s][Here's a video that shows the gameplay] <-- It's skipped directly to 3:10, where you can see the battle screen.

All your covers are amazing! Also I only played the first battle network game and I liked it. I should get back to those!

Great work sir.
