Probably the first cover I was really satisfied with, looking back. Noise work was pretty clumsy and I made some interesting calls on where to put things, but it turned out alright mostly due to the chiptune aesthetic of the source.

I give it a thumbs up!

I think it sounds a little hollow because the bass seems kind of quiet, but it's clean enough that I don't think that it really matters.

this is cool but i'd have liked it more if it was the original (read: superior) arrangement :L

Thanks guys. I'd for sure use the sawtooth as bass or change its duty cycle or something if I were to do this again; it is almost inaudible at times. I remember not knowing which channel to use for what back then so I'd just arbitrarily assign most of them, decide it sounded okay, and move on.

Damn, am I the only person on Earth who really enjoyed most of the arranged soundtrack? Not to put down the original Running Hell (an inspiring little ditty, that one), but I find this arrangement to be far more interesting. More diverse harmonies, less monotonous progressions, less repetitive general scoring, more moving parts at every turn... It's as fresh as a reimagining should be, I think.
Also, I'd assume the original has literally been done to death on account of how straightforward and catchy it is. Another reason I decided on this one.

Oh, is this the version that's called "new" in Cave Story +? I bought the game having only heard of it from a hat in Terraria, and didn't know that the default soundtrack was a remade version of the original soundtrack.

After listening to a lot of all three soundtracks, I really like them all in some way, shape or form. The original has its charm, the new puts a spin on things, and the remastered is the original done with new instruments to add depth.

The "new" soundtrack, while it has its differences from the original, is still really nice in my opinion, so you're not alone liking it for the most part, I only think that the Egg Corridor track is much better in the original and remastered for some reason.

I don't really know if the original has been done to death or not, I think I might've only seen it once on here.

I'm just going to leave this little thingie I made here if you're interested, I made it based on the original soundtrack.

I might actually start working on it again after seeing this thread...

And keep up the good work!

Hmm, good to see I'm not alone on the new tracks, though I am ambivalent about most of the remastered ones; it's nice but at times I feel that the aesthetic of the original doesn't mesh well with the new instrumentation.
I guess I was mostly responding to DalekSam on that one; I don't feel the original Running Hell is much superior in any sense, other than it being less distracting from the gameplay because of how simple and repetitive it is.

As for specifics, I actually like the new Egg Corridor track with the rhythmic blipping in the back. I'd say at worst the arranged stuff leaves me confused (chiefly Gestation and maybe Geothermal, which are kind of WTF...).

Yeah, the .ftm you attached is what I'd expected to see on a forum like this, an initiative to cover the entire soundtrack. It seems like such a natural fit for the tracker everybody's using.

Oh this is a joy to the ears, this is one of the few arrangements(this and the final battle music) I thought sounded a bit better in the "new" soundtrack and you did it great justice (I really didn't like the fact that most of the leads in the new arrangements sounded like GXSCC instruments and that they had no percussion at least judging from the tracks I've listened to) but yeah, this was a great listen and I would love to see more from you in the future. (btw the remastered soundtrack will always be the overall best in my honest opinion.)

Agreed. I got the Wii version and forgot to set it back to the original soundtrack, and I didn't even notice the soundtrack on my first playthrough. It was that boring. The only track where that "quiet" theme would work (namely, Geothermal), they cut out half the track and made it a loop of the same melody over and over. Uuuuugh.

Anyways, to the OP, good job!

Definitely agree with L77 and Daleksam; I had the same experience. While some of the rearrangements are slightly interesting, most of them don't work IMO and the tracks are so muted in-game that they're almost not there.

I think it's worth mentioning that the Cave Story 3D soundtrack by Danny Baranowsky) is actually pretty schweet.

This is a nice cover and all; I think we just have some issues with this version of Running Hell.

Mmm, no love for the arranged soundtrack. :-(

I can see where everybody's coming from. I'll be the first to admit that much of the new stuff is executed... inelegantly, to say the least; it often features strange, clumsy sounding instruments (GXSCC-like, yes) and suffers from a lot of sound design and balancing issues (like the pitch slides that are just slapped around all over the place; I'm consistently unhappy with stuff like that). Tracks like the new Grasstown are kinda disappointing because of all this despite containing ideas that I like.
I've also heard/read about the Wii version having a slew of technical difficulties like the aforementioned missing percussion and inaudibility and whatnot, and that's a real shame because it does poison the experience (a lot of the tracks uploaded to places like YouTube are the "broken" ones without percussion, and they sound mighty stupid).

...and yet, my reaction to the new music overall is still positive, not nearly as allergic as most others'. I did play Cave Story+ on PC, so I know nothing of the technical problems people have been having (the tracks were just as audible as anything else, no missing parts, etc.), but more importantly I think I was able to listen past most of the gawky implementation without being too bothered by it.
My only expectation was that the tracks would have interesting new stuff happening, and I found most of it pleasing. Stuff like the galloping chords in "Eyes of Flame," the undulating treble motif in "Mimiga Town," the expanded Doctor fight music ("Charge," I think it's called?), the snazzy rhythms and new harmonies in "Labyrinth Fight" (new harmonies in almost everything, actually), etc.

All in all, the new soundtrack certainly doesn't supplant the old one, but I don't think it's meant to. Other issues aside, it trades the singsong, repetitive charm of the originals for new counterpoint and more involved harmony, and I'm totally down with that. I'm definitely motivated to do more Cave Story+ covers in the future, or better yet take the concepts I like from different versions and try to integrate them.
