Hey guys! They say that stuff never gets finished, only abandoned. Definitely the case here, as I wanted to do more polishing on it. But weeks of procrastination turned to months, and it's getting close to a year, so I thought I'd just do some last polishing (not as much as I wanted) and release the thing.
Some notes:
* As in the original game, all tracks will play a variation of the theme using only drums & bass on the third iteration of the loop.
* All DPCM samples were ripped from the original game.
* Track 4 had to be transposed up a semitone to accommodate a low note.
* I had to add hi hats to a couple of tracks that didn't have them originally, or else they sounded too boring.
* Made with FamiTracker 0.2.9.
Cool! Sounds like it could be an 8-bit version of the game! I bet you were able to tackle this project easily, because there were usually only three channels of the YM2612 being used most of the time in the songs(aside from the sampled sounds). Good work. One thing I have to say about track 4, it's playing one key too high. Use the transpose feature to bring it back to the original, and it should be good. You'll have to excuse me if it looks like I'm picky on that sort of thing, it's just that I have perfect pitch.

I don't have perfect pitch and it bugs me too. The thing is, in the original key, the lowest note in the song is juuuust out of the NES's range, and it sounds really bad if you try to play it. At first I tried to fudge the note in some way, such as playing it an octave higher, but I didn't find any way to do it that satisfied me. Whatever I did, I had to make some kind of sacrifice, so I decided to just transpose the entire song.
You forgot the elevator jam, which would make it complete.
Nah, I didn't forget it, I just chose to leave it out. For what it's worth, though, the DPCM channel for track 3 is the same as the elevator jam. I thought about including it, but then I thought that, by the same logic, I should also include the music for the "jam out" mode, which is just the same as the game's six tracks with bass only. Then there's also the music that plays when you use the boombox in game...
It also just doesn't sound as good on NES as it does on the Genesis, so all this kind of adds up to "Why bother?" for me, to be honest. ^^;
By the way, I think track 4 illustrates a general composing tip pretty well: when something isn't sounding right, try the exact opposite, even if you don't think it'll work. The result might surprise you.
See, you'll notice that in patterns 0C and 0D, I changed the hi hat line to be a constant stream of 16th notes, whereas in the rest of the track it has these "gaps" on rows 04, 0A, and 1A to spice it up. I couldn't use the same hi hat line for those patterns because the song sorta changes its "flow" temporarily and it just doesn't work quite right. (The result is listenable, just dull.)
So the first thing I tried was to just take out the hi hats for those two patterns. Unfortunately, the result seemed too abrupt, like "where did the hi hats go"? It seemed to lose momentum. So then I decided to do the opposite: instead of taking hi hats out, add hi hats in, so that there are no gaps in the hi hat line. It sucks the funk out of it if you do this on the entire song, but I think it's great for a brief change of pace.
By the way, I'm sure some drummer out there is laughing that I'm seriously referring to a short burst of white noise as a "hi hat", but I don't care. :P It's still the same function.
Hey, are you going to add the "aaAAACHOO!" voice clip to the first song? Just wondering. And also, you should add the Elevator Jam to this. I listened to this again recently, and the songs still sound professional.

I don't think I should add the "achoo" 'cause that only plays when you turn the game on... it's not part of the actual tune. Remember that the tune appears in-game, too, and the "achoo" never appears when it does.
As for the Elevator Jam, I've already explained why I won't include it, but I suppose if enough people complain, I might anyway. :P
