Hi everyone! I just found this forum thing for famitracker so I thought I'd join up and make an introduction in this first post.
I stumbled upon the program early this year and have done some VGM covers in my spare time, learning on the fly. I'm not great at it and my repertoire is pretty limited because I'm overly fond of VRC6 (the sawtooth...!) and also I have no knowledge on (and/or don't care for) making/using DPCM; nevertheless, I hope it's listenable.
I did the attached one a few months back; the source should be familiar to anyone who's ever played SSBM. Hope it's a good enough first share.
Thanks. The original is an orchestral track and I did not adequately convey the scope and breadth of the sound. But yeah, this was made when I started experimenting more with the noise channel, seeing if I could make more sophisticated approximations of snare drums and such.
I'm going to go with Xyz and say that the noise in this cover is very beautifully done. Great cover!

I record (some) NSFs on hardware. Feel free to request a hardware render.
Thanks, guys. I guess it's a bit unfair because I already had a few months of tinkering and half a dozen attempted covers or so under my belt before doing this one; it was far from my first experience with famitracker (which is as unlistenable in comparison as it's supposed to be, haha).
Definitely cannot wait for more from you, my [genderpronoun].
My only criticism is that, while the noise is done amazingly, it could be done better with more pronounced hit distinction in pitch (or maybe bitrate, I've seen it done), though it's otherwise a great cover. VRC6 isn't the greatest for this song, personally I would've chosen the N163 for this cover, though that would be practically unlistenable by people without Slimeball's build (the one I use) or some other build that removes the multiplexer hiss.
Thanks! And for reference I am indeed a dude (the poster above guessed well). I really don't make these frequently, but I'll have some free time on my hands soon and I'm thinking about what to do next. In the meantime, I figured I'll steadily trickle out some of the more presentable ones I made before, so it looks like I'm contributing or something.
As for the cover, you're talking about having a distinct "impact" segment at the onset of each "snare hit?" I'm assuming that can be done in the instrument editor? I really don't know how to use the other stuff besides volume and duty adjustment, haha.
But yeah, I remember fiddling endlessly with things like pitch for the snare and not being satisfied, eventually settling for something that would patter about noticeably but not be so pronounced as to draw too much attention.
I definitely began to notice as I did more covers that the VRC6 is far from ideal for many musical styles, like orchestral stuff; faithfully representing the complexity and nuance of the source is beyond the chip's capabilities, even with inordinate amounts of micromanagement put into the ftm. I've stuck with VRC6 since the beginning, though, because I like shaping and working with the function-generated channels. I guess a lot of my work will sound weird because of it...
So I finally hooked up my gear and recorded this NSF on hardware. If you're at all interested to know how your NSF sounds on a real VRC6 cart, head over here for a download link. (:
What the hell?! Are you the same guy that commented on the Game Grumps video? What a coincidence :P
Well, probably. But I'm not sure what comment you're referring to. :/

Wow, thanks dude! It does sound slightly different, but I can't really put my finger on it... the channel levels are balanced differently, or they're not interfering the same ways in the same places, or something. It's really subtle.
you can certainly use 2a03 noise well, but i felt the vrc6 pulse strings were a bit lacking, so i used my fake-SID magic on them
Hmm, I like it. More harmonically involved than before, though just listening to the VRC6 pulses alone I thought it would sound really weird. I haven't really experimented with more complex duty cycle patterns; seems like it's possible to make some pretty interesting timbres.
Also, I'm pretty sure Warheart was referring to me. We recently crossed paths on the YouTube.

Hey man! Small world.
