I haven't posted here for a bit. college is almost wrapping up for me (starting the final classes soon!) My net went out a couple weeks back, so I threw this together while waiting for Comcast to fix their DNS issue. anyways, I covered this by ear / memory. As per usual let me know of any glaring errors. My favorite tune from Chrono Trigger.
oh boy.....I think you should go back and listen to the original. The timing seems good on all the patterns, but a lot of notes are wrong throughout the whole tune.
EDIT: It was especially the main arpeggio throughout the tune that was wrong. I made a very quick edit by ear also. I know for sure that the arpeggio has a few variations at some key moments, but I didn't do them.

And then those halts. I stopped listening when I realized they were everywhere. I'm sorry saying it, but it's just horribly painful with headphones on, especially good ones like my own. Please, use volume changes instead of complete halts.
I just hope I wasn't too mean about it. Just that chrono trigger music plays a big part of my life, and probably my most listened OST ever. I agree with the note cuts being a bit harsh. might want to try Axx or volume swells.
oh no its cool, I like input on stuff like that. can't get offended over honesty. only makes me strive to improve
This right here. Nothing gets me more pissed than a person who won't admit the truth.
I haven't listened to the original, so no accuracy tips from me. But like SoltiW said, please put note releases instead of note cuts, if you know how to do those. And make the volume decrease as time passes...

I heard the beginning and started to cringe, but then I thought okay, this was probably done on purpose. Especially when I heard some of the notes on the lead not transposed directly. As in they would be different from the original if transposed back to its former notes. So I thought it was a style sort of thing--a new flavor added to the song.
I didn't mind the note cuts, really. Adds that retro feel to it. But yeah, make sure all your chords actually fit the leading instruments. That's backwards, however. You usually, though not always, want to lay down the foundation stuff (aka chords, maybe even percussion to help you keep rhythm) before you add in all the fancy lead notes. Unless you're going experimental like I do sometimes. Or as often in my case, the lead notes ARE the chords.
So make sure that your notes are all working together, not against each other. If something seems a bit weird, don't ignore it, go back and mess with it.
And if you're going to do a cover of a song, make sure it's one of these:
1) original and creative, yet holding true to the most "important" aspects of the original,
2) a complete remix of it with small fragments of the original, or
3) a cover which sounds as close as you can get it on whichever composition program you're using.
I'm not a music scholar, so don't take my advice as law, however. Some may have stuff to add, or even completely disagree. Best of fortune, friend! <3
