It's been bothering me that I cannot get accurate triplets in FamiTracker. I'm sure there is a very simple way to remedy this using the tools provided in FamiTracker. I'm new to this stuff and was wondering if there's a specific way you guys do it? Any input would be great. Thanks!
yeah, that bugs me too. using note delay commands G02 and G04 they'll be fine at the default speed/tempo, but the more you mess with the tempo the more wonky they'll get (in fact, changing the tempo can cause some other timing issues as well, as I've found out.) i dunno if it's something that's possible to fix unfortunately, i recall jsr mentioning something about the tempo control being sort of hacky. i hope there is a solution though.
I always use the arpeggio tool in the instrument editor, and/or the volume tool... that way I don't have to change the tempo at all... It takes trial and error, but I can generally always get it to work well.
I'll try and post a sample of that tonight when I am home and have access to FT.
Awesome! I look forward to seeing it. I've in the process of converting this Finale project I originally developed and it's driving me crazy that I cannot get the triplets where I want them (specifically because I use them to outline the motives and I put 4 vs. 3 a lot).
So I was about to head to sleep... and then I remembered I made a promise... So I spent like 20 mins making this little demo of triplets. I made every instrument do triplets with a few different methods.
For the Squares - I use the arpeggio to do a melodic triplet (if you need to do different notes that's what I recommend.
For the noise channel, I only edited the volume.
For the Triangle Toms, it was a bit trickier, for the toms to hit three times you can't have the pitch be |12 - so I did...
I made the volume channel mute ever -108; at each -108 the pitch is set back to 0.
Just a note: for every track you do with a different tempo, you will have to readjust the instruments/channels. If you decide to change a tempo after composing the track, you will have to readjust everything as well...
Any questions feel free to ask. It's late, I'm tired and possible not as coherent as I could be, but I hope this helps!
I don't get it, why do you have a sequence that's basically all 9? why don't you just use one 9? similarly, there should only be one 0 at the end of an instrument that ends that way, because extra 0's aren't producing any more silence than the first one.
i'm not sure why you wouldn't just use note delay directly on notes though... you're creating more work for yourself! making instruments makes sense if you wanna avoid copying & pasting loads of the same volume/duty/pitch/etc. commands into the patterns - instruments save redundancy and make repetitive tasks easier - what it isn't good for is the opposite, because you'll end up with tonnes of instruments that each only get used for one or two note triggers in a whole song (unless you write verrrry repetitive music!) for instance in your example you've got two different instruments for the downwards and upwards triplets - speaking for myself i use triplets all the time with different pitch shapes or with varying duty effects and whatever else. i'd potentially have loads of instruments, not a pretty work environment.
also, if you change the tempo on a song that uses triplets in instruments, they'll basically not work at all (since speed/tempo doesn't affect the speed of instrument settings.) i've attached a modification of your example using note delay instead, if you change the tempo they will still sound reasonable but sometimes i've found they get a bit wonky, which is the issue i'm concerned about. though to be fair you need a good ear to hear the wonkiness, it's not too blatant.
There's many ways to do triplets in trackers. Note delays (often used if there are only a few triplets in your song), and instrument macros are a couple, but the easiest is simply to change the speed playback of your pattern from multiples of 3 to multiples of 2. You need to change your pattern lengths from 64 (speed 6) to 48 (speed 4) or 96 (speed 2). Then, every other row used are triplets. If you miss your regular notes, you will have to use speed 2, pattern length 96, and every third row will be a regular note. Change your Row Highlight to 3 instead of 4 so you don't get confused.
It's all about pattern speeds.
Please check the added-on IT files (you'll need an IT tracker to view the patterns) as possible references.
If you guys need me to, I will make a YouTube video demonstrating this.

Notice the triplets with regular quarter notes?
If you guys need help, feel free to ask me. I will be more than willing to help.
Here is a crappy little FTM I threw together for you all as well. Keep in mind I only did this in 10 minutes so don't expect it to be super perfect note-wise. :P
Ah... cool cool... but wouldn't changing the speed make doing quarter notes against quarter triplets difficult and/or impossible?
I find it easier to keep track of everything in my head when the tempo stays the same through the whole song (or at least through major sections.) I generally don't change the tempo after I have it down the first time, so that's why I use the instrument macros for my songs.
Yes, it would make things slightly impossible, which is when you would either use note delays, or simply change the pattern speed to go faster. The tempo of the song never changes, the pattern speed changes, but not the tempo.
But regardless of how much easier it is to do, these really are the more efficient ways to do it in terms of tracking.
It's certainly better than the dotted quarter notes people keep using for covers that originally use triplet notes.
yea the method i mentioned is better for sporadic use of triplets in an otherwise straight song. otherwise i would just space the notes differently.
and, no problemo =]

no freaking kidding, people just can't tell the difference. someone over at vgmusic threw a hissyfit at me because i deleted a file of theirs for that very reason.
