FamiTracker
I have told them, countless times, that I've had Famitracker on my friend's computer for months and it has yet to crash at all for anything. My friends brought up Internet Explorer being the practical gateway for viruses and that it couldn't be Famitracker...and that my family is a bunch of ignorant, single-minded pansies. Has ANYBODY else complained about this program starting a virus or is it likely something else?

In front of the people who suspect it's a virus, go to [url=http://www.virustotal.com]http://www.virustotal.com with scripts enabled and upload FamiTracker.exe. Then wait and smile.
Sadly, Famitracker has also been mislabeled as a music-sharing program by some ignorant educators in Florida.
If you need to break it down for them, the best way is to explain the name. Fami = Famicom, or Japanese NES (everyone knows what a NES is), and tracker = music sequencer. Then explain that hundreds of people have used this program for something like 10 years and that the proof is all over youtube.
Then again, you probably know all of this already.
How 'bout showin' the Family the real NES and a powerpak with a nsf in it written by FamiTracker

Depends how "dumb" they are. (I know it sounds hard but it the same with every parent.)
Yeah, I would say three things: one, follow B00daW's and cak's advice; two, get Sandboxie and run it from there (also purposefully running old Trojans which don't steal your information to show that even if FT were a trojan then the computer would be safe); three, ask jsr to contact them. I know the last one is a bit of a stretch and that jsr probably has a full-time job IRL as well, but ehh, if that doesn't convince them, I have no idea what will.

Well, I tried a combination of things that you all suggested plus my usual "I'm going to be a sarcastic dick towards them" moment while doing so...
Let's just say that they won't ever be talking about Virus and Famitracker in the same sentence ever again. They learned their lessons: Famitracker doesn't have viruses on it and if you claim something, expect me to do everything in my power to prove you wrong if it is such. Thanks, everybody ^_^

Considering that Famitracker is by far the most popular means to make NSF music, and that Wikipedia has articles for other popular music trackers, maybe now is a good time to think about creating a Wikipedia entry for Famitracker. It might help average internet users to not be so confused about the purpose of the program.
